Forced engagement instigated Bengaluru techie to commit suicide?

Bengaluru, Nov 25: Software engineer Geethanjali U(27), who fell to her death from the terrace of a 10-storey building in Cessna Business Park, Kadubeesanahalli in Bengaluru on Wednesday, had searched online on ways to commit suicide, Marathahalli police said.

Geethanjali had got engaged at her Goa home on Tuesday (a day before her suicide), which was also her birthday. The police now suspect that her engagement to a man against her wish might have been the trigger.

Police retrieved pictures of her engagement from her mobile phone, which was sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for testing and also found text messages from her friends congratulating her on the "double bonus" for getting engaged on her birthday on November 21. Geethanjali's response had been muted, as she replied "yes, yes."

Parents of Geethanjali kept silent over her engagement, telling the police that they had no idea why the techie took the extreme step and had no one to suspect.

Police investigation revealed that Geethanjali was unhappy over her engagement, but complied with her parent's wishes to keep them happy. She gave no sign of her unhappiness and her parents assumed she was happy with the engagement.

After arriving in Bengaluru on Wednesday, Geethanjali went to the terrace of the tech park housing her office and tried convincing her mother and aunt on a phone call about cancelling the engagement. She then jumped off the building. Geethanjali's mother and aunt did not tell the police about her last phone call.

Police are planning to interrogate Geethanjali's colleagues on Friday to find out if she was in a relationship with someone else and if that was the reason for her unhappiness over her engagement.

Marathahalli police sub-inspector Nagaraju said a case had been registered under unnatural death (Section 174 of the IPC), but in view of the new facts, the case has been upgraded to suspicious death under IPC Section 174.

An engineer with ADVA Optical Networking in Cessna Business Park near Kadubeesanahalli, Geethanjali died after falling from the office building on Wednesday.

The post-mortem was performed at Vydehi Hospital, after which it was handed over to the family at 12.30 pm. Geethanjali was cremated at Kudlu.

Vijayapura, June 16: Even as a video of a man wearing a burqa who is being thrashed by locals is going viral on social media, netizens targeted Bharatiya Janata Party for their activist resorting to heinous acts. 

The man who was caught in burqa has been identified as Siddu Paragond, an activist of Snagh Parivar hailing from Sindgi town in Karnataka’s Vijayapura district. 

The bizarre incident took place in Sindgi on June 11 outside a bank.

“While people including women were standing in a queue outside the bank, the person in burqa was acting in a suspicious manner. The person was trying to get too close to women which was making them feel awkward,” local residents said.

“Getting suspicious, some locals tried to interact and their suspicion rose with the strange behaviour of the person. Suddenly some men took the person away from the bank and checked only to find that it was a man in burqa. The men thrashed him and handed him over to police,” the sources said.

Confirming this, Superintendent of Police Anupam Agrawal said that the Siddu Paragond has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. He, however, made it clear that no suspicious objects were found on Siddu. “We are trying to find out the motive for his act,” the SP said.

Shivamogga, Jun 13: Senior BJP leader and Karnataka Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, K S Eshwarappa on Saturday opined that during the selection of candidates to the legislative council, the party needs to take into consideration those who helped the party in formation of government in the State.

Speaking to media persons on the sideline of a programme here, he said the party high command would give another surprise while issuing tickets during the MLC election.

Mr Eshwrappa said that party high command will take a call on selecting candidates, but priority should be given to the leader who won on Congress and Janata Dal and then jumped to BJP which helped to form govt under the leadership of B S Yediyurappa.

Bengaluru, May 4: A total of 37 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in the last 24 hours in Karnataka taking the total number to 651, State Health Department said on Monday.

"Thirty seven new coronavirus positive cases have been confirmed in Karnataka from 5 pm yesterday to 5 pm today. The total number of cases in the state stands at 651," the department said.

The total number of cases includes 27 deaths and 321 persons who have been discharged. Of the remaining 302 cases, 296 patients are in isolation in designated hospitals and six patients are in ICU.

India has registered 2,553 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours and the total number of cases now stands at 44,532.
