Shivamogga, Sept 13: A first-year student from Karnataka, pursuing B Tech course in mechanical engineering at IIT-Guwahati, allegedly committed suicide by hanging on Wednesday.

The police said Nagashree S.C., 18, from Shivamogga, left a note behind saying she wanted to be a teacher, not an engineer.

“Her roommate had gone to attend classes. When she returned she found the room locked. She made phone calls to Nagashree which went unanswered. She then informed the security,” an IIT spokesperson said.

IIT security officials got in touch with the local police who broke open the door of the room and found the first semester student hanging from the ceiling fan. A brief suicide note written in English was found in the room.

“She wrote that it was better to die than fail to live up to the expectations of her parents and family members,” Rana Bhuyan, in-charge of Amingaon police outpost, said.

“She seemed to be depressed that she had to pursue engineering. She also wrote how she could not fulfil the expectations of her parents,” Sanjib Saikia, Additional Superintendent of Police, Kamrup, said. “Engineering sucks,” she wrote in the suicide note, according to Saikia.

“It has been barely one-and-a-half months since she joined the course,” the IIT spokesperson said adding that she had undergone the mandatory counselling session for first-year students recently. “Nothing abnormal was noticed in the interaction,” the spokesperson claimed.

IIT Guwahati has four counsellors for around 6,000 students, according to the spokesperson

Bengaluru, Apr 7: Former Minister and Leader of the Opposition Siddaramiah on Tuesday termed the shutting by private clinics in the state by doctors as an 'inhuman act'.

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, the Congress leader said due to the fear of Novel Coronavirus, the doctors have closed their private clinics, which was against their profession.

This has affected the people, especially those, who are suffering from other deceases. He urged Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to intervene and resolve the issue immediately.

Despite the government instructions not to close down their clinics, the doctors have not been responding positively, Mr Siddaramaiah noted.

In this connection, the government should act seriously and give necessary warning to the doctors, to either open their clinics to serve the people, or face action, he added.

Udupi, Jun 5: Senior BJP leader and Lok Sabha member Shobha Karandlje accused members of Tablighi Jamaat of spreading Coronavirus, particularly in slums, in Bengaluru.

Speaking to newsmen here Friday night, she said that the members had intentionally spread the virus in Siddique Layout and Padarayanapura. Members had hatched a conspiracy to destroy the country. She would raise the issue with the central government.

She said that New Delhi and Maharashtra were responsible for rising Covid-19 cases in the country. Highlighting the programmes, introduced by Modi-led NDA government for the past six years, she blamed Covid-19 for the collapse of the economy. But for Covid-19 Modi government at the Centre would have been a leader in the world,” she added.

She said 13,541 people, stranded in other States and foreign countries, had returned to Udupi. “We have sufficient beds in the district to tackle the situation. But if more people decide to travel to Udupi, arranging quarantine facilities would be a huge challenge,” she added.
