Former hockey player from Kodagu stabbed to death by wife

Madikeri, Aug 21: A former hockey player from Kodagu was allegedly stabbed to death by his wife over some dispute in Malad suburb located in the northern part of Mumbai.

52-year-old Chenanda Naveen Appaiah and his wife Amita had an argument over some issue at around 1 pm yesterday. The dispute escalated into a fight and during the scuffle, Amita stabbed her husband, said a police official.

"Even though the motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained, the dispute appears to be the immediate reason behind the killing," a senior police official attached to Malad police station said. Amita is yet to be arrested as she too has sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment at the hospital, said police.

Meanwhile, a television actress, who stays on the 26th floor of the same building, said, "My domestic help heard a scream at around 1:15 pm and found Amita lying near her door and writhing in pain. "He then went down and informed the security guards about the incident, but they refused any help and instead asked the domestic help to call police helpline number."

Appaiah, who had moved to Mumbai years ago was a close friend of former Indian hockey captain Dhanraj Pillai.

Bengaluru, Aug 3: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and his daughter have been admitted to the Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru for observation after testing positive for COVID-19. The Chief Minister is in clinically stable condition.

"Karnataka Chief Minister has been admitted to the hospital for observation. He is doing well, is clinically stable and will be monitored closely by our team," Manipal Hospital said on Monday.
"His daughter has tested positive for COVID-19. She has been admitted to the hospital," added the hospital in another statement.

Yediyurappa had on Sunday tweeted that he had tested positive for COVID-19. The Chief Minister, 77, said he is fine and is being hospitalised as a precaution on the recommendation of doctors.

"I have tested positive for coronavirus. Whilst I am fine, I am being hospitalised as a precaution on the recommendation of doctors. I request those who have come in contact with me recently to be observant and exercise self-quarantine," Yediyurappa wrote.

Udupi, May 2: During the lockdown period the Department of Public Library digitised more books to the Karnataka Digital Public Library (KDPL).

According to the data released by the KDPL issued here on Saturday , as on April 29, 89,239 people from the State have already registered for the digital library.  From these 1,807 are from Dakshina Kannada district and 605 from the Udupi district.

The digital library already has a repository of 35,500 e-books, 4,800 videos, 59,980 e-journals and 1,112 items for children.

Bengaluru, May 27: Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Wednesday hit out at Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa-led Karnataka government for allegedly "betraying" the people by not fulfilling its Rs 1,610 crore COVID-19 package promise.

Taking a dig at Yediyurappa over the matter, the Congress leader tweeted, "Chief Minister of Karnataka BS Yediyurappa has betrayed people by not fulfilling his Rs 1,610 crore package promise. He seems to be following his @BJP4India leader @PMOIndia @narendramodi."

"Crisis and vulnerability should not be misused for political gains and BJP for India is insensitive towards the same," the former Karnataka Chief Minister said.

On May 6, Yediyurappa had urged migrant workers to stay back as construction activities have resumed and announced a Rs 1,610 crores COVID-19 financial package for the state.

"A package of Rs 1,610 crores will be released as COVID-19 financial relief. One time compensation of Rs 5,000 will be given to 2,30,000 barbers and 7,75,000 drivers," the Chief Minister said.

Referring to media reports, Siddarmiah cornered the state government for asking the licence to release funds for unorganised sector workers.

"How can we expect washermen and other unorganised sector workers to have licence for their work?" he asked.

It looks like Karnataka Chief Minister is very far from reality, he added.
