Former IB officer challenges charge sheet in Ishrat case

Former_IB_officerAhmedabad, Feb 12: The former IB Special Director, Rajinder Kumar, who has been charge-sheeted, along with three serving IB officers, by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the 2004 Ishrat Jahan ‘fake encounter’ case, has challenged the move, arguing that the investigating agency did not have the mandatory sanction to prosecute the four.

The CBI’s supplementary charge sheet filed on February 6, months after charging seven Gujarat policemen in the case, says the IB officials have been accused on the basis of call details.

Mr. Kumar’s plea before a CBI magisterial court glosses over anything about the investigation but maintains that under Section 197 of the Criminal Procedure Code, government sanction is a must, and this has not been taken. That is why the charge sheet is illegal, Mr. Kumar’s advocate S.V. Raju told the court.

But magistrate H.S. Khutwad refused to accept the application until his office thoroughly verified the charge sheet.

He said the court would consider counsel’s arguments while examining the charge sheet papers.

Besides Mr. Kumar, the CBI has accused IB officials T. Mittal, M.K. Sinha and Rajiv Wankhede.

The CBI has also submitted the phone numbers from which calls were made to the IB office and others.

New Delhi, Feb 11: Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari on Tuesday said the party will review why it failed to meet its own expectations in the Assembly polls and saw a moral victory in the fact that the party's vote share has increased since 2015.

"Delhi must have given mandate after careful thinking. Our vote percentage has increased from 32 per cent to around 38 per cent. Delhi did not reject us and the increase (in vote share) is a good sign for us," he told reporters.

He said the BJP hopes that there would be less blame game and more work in the national capital and congratulated Arvind Kejriwal on his party's victory in the polls.

After winning the Patparganj seat, AAP senior leader Manish Sisodia accused the BJP of indulging in the politics of hate.

"We indulge in politics of development not politics of hate. We're against the roadblock in Shaheen Bagh as we were earlier," he said.

Lucknow, Aug 4: Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat on Tuesday left for Ayodhya to attend foundation laying ceremony of Ram Temple tomorrow.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of the Ram temple in Ayodhya on August 5. The construction of Ram temple will begin in Ayodhya after the said ceremony in which various dignitaries from political and religious fields are scheduled to participate.

Bhagwat, along with PM Modi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Governor Anandiben Patel and President of Ram Mandir Trust, Nitya Gopal Das will be present on stage for the event.

Supreme Court, on November 9 last year, had directed the Central government to hand over the site at Ayodhya for the construction of a Ram temple.

The formation of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust was announced on February 5 for the construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya. The Trust has been mandated by the Central government to oversee the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya.

New Delhi, Feb 8: A 26-year-old woman sub-inspector (SI) of the Delhi Police was shot dead near Rohini East Metro station on Friday night, officials said.

The SI, Preeti Ahlawat, was posted in Patparganj Industrial Area Police Station, police said.

A call about the incident was received around 9.30 pm, they said, adding she received gunshot wounds on her head.

"We have identified the suspects and CCTV footage of the area has been collected," said SD Mishra, Additional Commissioner of Police (Rohini).

Three empty cartridges were found from the spot, the officer said, adding a case has been registered and a probe is on.

Personal enmity is suspected to be the reason behind the killing, the officer said.

Ahlawat joined the Delhi Police in 2018.
