Former Karnataka minister quits BJP, joins JDS

Bengaluru, Jan 15: Former State Minister Anand Asnotikar today quit BJP and joined the Janata Dal Secular, ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Karnataka.

Asnotikar along with his followers joined the JDS in the presence of party supremo and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, and state President H D Kumaraswamy here.

Asnotikar said he was joining JDS, a regional party for the welfare of the border region he represents.

"After certain painful incidents that my family and I had to face in the district, my supporters and well-wishers advised me to start afresh with a regional party," he said.

Only a regional party can bring development to border areas like Karwar and Ankola, he said.

Welcoming Asnotikar, Gowda said his joining shows how the JDS is growing stronger day by day.

Asnotikar, who was elected on Congress ticket in 2008 from Karwar, had resigned from the party and the assembly to switch loyalty to the then ruling BJP, following which he was made Minister for Fisheries, Science and Technology.

B S Yeddyurappa was the Chief Minister then.

Asnotikar, who won the subsequent bypoll from Karwar on BJP ticket, lost during the 2013 assembly polls.

2nd flight chattered by KSCC brings 171 stranded Kannadigas from UAE to Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jun 27: The second flight chartered by the Karnataka Sports and Cultural Club (KSCC) to repatriate stranded Kannadigas in UAE landed at Mangalore International Airport at 6 p.m. today.

The Air Arabia flight with 171 passengers took off from Sharjah international airport around 1 am (UAE Time). The flight had 18 pregnant women, 9 children, 3 infants, 8 senior citizens, 20 people with medical emergencies besides those have lost jobs, stranded visit visa holders and those who had reported deaths in their families.

KSCC had set up help desk to finalize list of passengers and guide them throughout the process. All the legal procedures were carried out smoothly.

KSCC president Mohammed Ismail accorded a warm welcome to all passengers. Rapid tests for Covid-19 were conducted before departure. Mandatory quarantine for all the passengers was arranged in three hotels in Mangaluru for a period of seven days.

KSCC office bearers Ismail, Javed, Safwan and volunteers were present at the airport during the time of departure. KSCC has expressed its gratitude to Consulate General, DC of DK district, Umar U H and Ataullah Jokkate for their support.

Wild elephant spotted in Kukke Subramanya pilgrim centre

Mangaluru, Feb 20: A wild tusker was spotted in Kukke Subrahmanya town here, in the early hours of Thursday.

Range Forest Officer (RFO), Kukke Subrahmanya Tyagaraj said that it was seen walking from Kashi Kattte in the town to Nuchila around 0530 hours without creating any havoc.

The same elephant was spotted some days ago at Harihara, a small village town near Kukke Subrahmanya.

It has been roaming around in the forests nearby for some time now. So far, it had not caused disturbance to people nor had it damaged any property, Mr. Tyagaraj said.

Kukke Subrahmanya is on the foot of the Western Ghats.

CBSE Class 12 results: Kochi girl scored 499 out of 500, wants to pursue career in economics

Kochi, Jul 15: Alisha P Shaji, a commerce student from Kerala's Kochi scored 499 out of 500 in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) class 12 results declared on Monday, wants to pursue a career in economics.

While talking to news agency on Tuesday, she said that she never joined coaching classes.

"I was surprised after knowing the unexpected result. I never expected this, I expected close to 98 per cent. I had five subjects to write but I could attempt only three as two were postponed. I am sad that I could not attempt them, but I am happy that I scored 100 in those subjects. In future, I want to pursue a degree in economics," she said.

"My friends, family and teachers are very supportive and I am thankful to them. I never went to tuitions. I used to study four to five hours a day," she added.

Alisha further said that she wants to give the message that it is okay to start late, but continuity is key to achieve good results.
CBSE on Monday had declared the results for Class 12 examinations 2020.

As per CBSE, with 88.78 per cent pass percentage this year for Class 12, the pass percentage has increased by 5.38 per cent. Last year, the pass percentage was 83.40 per cent.
