Four actresses including Bhavana quit male-dominated AMMA after Dileep’s reinstatement

Newsroom, Jun 27: In a major embarrassment for Malayalam film industry, four prominent actresses including the one who was abducted and sexually assaulted, have resigned from the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), in protest against the organisation’s decision to reinstate actor Dileep.

The four actresses who took a bold decision are Bhavana, Rima Kallingal, Ramya Nambeesan and Geetu Mohandas. All of them are members of Women in Cinema Collective (WCC).

Dileep was ousted from AMMA last year after he was named as an accused in the abduction and sexual assault case. However, last Sunday, a general body meeting of AMMA, under the newly-elected president Mohanlal, had taken the decision to reinstate Dileep.

Bhavana, who acted in most of the south Indian languages, in her statement, said that she did not find any meaning in continuing in AMMA which never stood with her, even when she raised complaints in the past.

“I am resigning not just because the accused actor (Dileep) has been taken back into AMMA. Even before, this actor had scuttled many of my acting opportunities. When I complained against this, AMMA had taken no action. Now, when such an unfortunate incident happened in my life, the organisation again tried to protect the accused. I resign from the organisation having understood that there is no purpose in being part of it,” said the statement.

The other WCC members, in a common statement on their Facebook page, said that AMMA has proven whose side it was on, by taking back Dileep.

“The AMMA has, since its formation in 1995, not taken any attempt to bring about a women-friendly workplace in the industry. When the WCC made attempts in this direction, it was met with the muscle power of the fans associations and crass humour. The organisation did not think about the survivor, its own member, when deciding to take back the accused. Hope our resignation will be a reason for AMMA to correct its wrong decisions,” said the statement.

Karnataka stops covid-19 testing for asymptomatic international travellers

Bengaluru, May 28: The Karnataka government has done away with previously mandatory COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic international travellers.

The development comes a day after the government issued a circular, which allowed placing of international travellers into home quarantine if they had completed seven days of institutional quarantine.

A circular signed by Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary to the State Government, dated May 27, says that any “person who has completed seven days of institutional quarantine and is asymptomatic can be permitted for home quarantine with a COVID-19 test (RT-PCR), subject to undergoing a medical check-up.”

This check-up equates to thermal screening (with a required temperature of under 37.5C or 99.5F and pulse oximetry of under 94%).

The circular added that all elderly people, over the age of 60, and those with comorbidities (such as Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, asthma, heart ailment, renal disease...etc) are “required to be clinically evaluated diligently prior to shifting them for quarantine.”

On Wednesday, Pankaj Pandey, Commissioner, the Department of Health and Family Welfare said that these new guidelines were based on recommendations from the COVID Task Force. A member of the COVID Task Force said that new strategies had been formulated based on the latest findings on how the SARS-Cov-2 virus affects people.

Mangaluru: Over 7K screened for coronavirus at Airport; over 1K at port

Mangaluru, Feb 12: More than 7,000 people at Mangalore International Airport (MIA) and over 1,000 at the New Mangalore Port (NMP) have undergone thermal screening for the novel coronavirus in the past few days, a taluk health official said on Wednesday.

A few more ships are scheduled to arrive at the port and all precautionary measures to check the ship’s passengers and crew are ready, he said.

Soon after a positive case of deadly pathogen surfaced in Kerala, the district health officials here actively started monitoring all entry points in the bordering district.

Apart from Mangaluru, there is bus connectivity to Puttur, Sullia, Bantwal, Dharmasthala and Subrahmanya from Kerala. More than eight to 10 trains arrive at Mangaluru daily from Kerala.

Hence, it is impossible to take up screening of all the vehicles arriving from Kerala, sources in District Health and Family Welfare said.

Mangaluru: St Agnes College celebrates 99th College Day and Merit Programme

St. Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, which is celebrating its centenary year, celebrated 99th college day and merit programme of the academic year 2019-20 in P.U College Auditorium on February 11.

Ms. Philomina Lobo, Retired Director, Secondary Education department of public instructions, Government of India was the chief guest of the programme. The programme began by evoking the blessings of God. Sr Dr M Jeswina A.C, Principal, St Agnes College, Sr Dr M Maria Roopa A.C, the Joint Secretary, Mr. Ronald Pereira PTA Vice President, Mr Charles Pais the Controller of Examinations ,Dr Subha Rao were present.

Ms. Seemanthini, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Applications presented the annual college report digitally, highlighting the achievements of the institution, staff and students for the academic year.

Addressing the students, Ms Philomina Lobo advised, “You have knowledge and intelligence but you need to pray for wisdom. Use your talents in the right way.” She also mentioned that the companies today are looking forward for skilful youngsters and asked the students to “be skilful” in order to achieve success in life.

Students received Principal's role of honour, various scholarships and merit certificates for their excellence in academics. The cabinet members of the current academic year were also awarded on the occasion. The Principal gave a token of gratitude to Ms Philomena Lobo, who is also an alumna of the college. Mrs Meera, HOD, Department of History proposed the vote of thanks.
