Four 'adventurous' madrasa students trespass at Belagavi airport

October 15, 2016

Belagavi/Bengaluru, Oct 15: Four students of a madrasa were detained for trespassing on the runway of the Belagavi airport and moving around suspiciously on Friday.

trespass

Police released the students after it emerged that they had set out on an adventure, and the madrasa's principal gave an undertaking that the incident would not recur.

A total of 12 students, aged 18-22, climbed the airport's eight-foot-high steel wire fence which runs parallel to the compound wall and ventured near the runway in the high-security zone.

The incident happened around 10.30 am, more than an hour before the scheduled arrival of a SpiceJet flight from Bengaluru, official sources said. Personnel of the Karnataka State Industrial Security Force (KSISF), which is in charge of security at the airport, were caught unawares.

They managed to detain four students but others escaped. Those detained were identified as Shaikh Sameer, 20, from Hyderabad, Bandenawaz Jamadar, 19, of Bagalkot, Toufiq, 19, and Babul, 18. They are all students of a madrasa at Pant-Balekundri village near the airport, around 13 km from Belagavi city centre, the sources said.

The detained students didn't possess any mobile phones. The madrasa's principal, Mohammad Saleem Walikar, visited the jurisdictional Marihal police station and confirmed that the youths were students of the religious school.

He gave an undertaking that such an incident would not recur. The students were later released, Belagavi Police Commissioner T G Krishna Bhatta said.

The madrasa has around 200 students. With Friday being the weekly holiday for the madrasa, the students had set out on an adventure and trespassed on the airport.

The airport's compound wall cuts access to an approach road to farm fields and housing colonies of Honnihal, Balekundri, Modaga, Mavinkatti and Pant-Balekundri villages.

The villagers are opposed to the construction of the compound wall, saying it deprived them of the approach road.

Shepherds graze their sheep on the airport premises while inquisitive youths often watch planes land and take off as they hover above their head.

Security tightened

Friday's incident initially alarmed security officials as Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh was to arrive in Bengaluru in the afternoon.

Not taking any chances, the Bengaluru police have tightened security in and around the Kempegowda International Airport and the HAL?airport.

Additional Commissioner of Police (East) P?Harishekharan said that the jurisdictional DCP and ACPs had been instructed to carry out intense patrolling and sabotage checks and look out for suspicious movements. Airport authorities have been directed to thoroughly frisk the passengers, he said.

Mohammad Hussain Ali Qureshi, a resident of Kalaburagi, was arrested on December 3, 2015, after he was found to be filming the Belagavi airport. His camera also had pictures and videos of other locations.

Bengaluru, Jan 17: Chief minister BS Yediyurappa is likely to induct new ministers into his cabinet only after he returns from Davos, Switzerland, on January 25.

Yediyurappa will leave for Davos on January 19 to participate in the World Economic Forum’s 50th annual meet.

Sources say Yediyurappa is keen on expanding his cabinet before he leaves for Davos and is still trying to secure the green signal from BJP national president Amit Shah. However, Shah has cold-shouldered Yediyurappa’s several requests for a meeting to discuss the issue.

Shah is scheduled to visit Karnataka on January 18 to participate in a pro-Citizenship (Amendment) Act rally in Hubballi and the CM plans to corner him there. But, given the time constraint, Yediyurappa is likely to put off the exercise till he returns from Davos even if Shah extends approval.

“Even if Shah gives the green signal, Yediyurappa will have less than 24 hours to expand his cabinet,” a source said. “It is highly unlikely he will rush through the process of inducting ministers. Also, his presence is required to douse disgruntlement which is bound to arise once the new ministers are sworn in.”

The CM and the party high command are on different pages as far as cabinet expansion is concerned. While Yediyurappa is hell-bent on keeping his promise of inducting all the newly elected MLAs, who switched from Congress and JD(S) to the BJP, Shah is keen on sharing vacant berths equally between loyal MLAs and the new entrants. There are 16 cabinet berths vacant.

Shah, sources said, is of the opinion that giving 12 berths to the turncoats will lead to heartburn among loyalists and it will impact the party’s prospects in the next election. “Moreover, he is of the opinion that none of the turncoats have mass appeal, nor do they have any administrative experience. This, he thinks, will impact governance,” said a source.

This has resulted in a deadlock and the issue has dragged on for a month now.

Mandya, Feb 9: A youth from Arechakanahalli village of Maddur taluk on Saturday allegedly committed suicide in Bengaluru after his lover got engaged to another man.

The body of the deceased, Darshan, was found hanging from the celising of his room in Bengaluru. According to Darshan's relatives, he was in love with a girl for the past few years.

Darshan had wanted to marry her, much to the chagrin of her parents, it is said.

The girl's parents had allegedly warned him of dire consequences if he did not stay clear from their daughter. In the meanwhile, she got engaged to another man.

Feeling left out, Darshan allegedly ended his life. In the suicide note, Darshan has held his lover and some of her relatives responsible for his death. He has also claimed that his family was facing death threat from her family.

There are rumours that Darshan might have been killed after he refused to stop seeing the girl. Though both the families are from the same community, their financial status, sources said, is different.

According to the relative of Darshan, the girl is a close relative to a former minister from Mandya district.

"There are reasons to suspect that Darshan might have been murdered, and a suicide note may have been planted at the crime spot.

A proper investigation should be conducted to unearth the truth," he said.
