Four get life sentence in 2011 jail murder case

Udupi, Mar 29: A local court here has sentenced four persons in the murder of an undertrial, Vinod Shettigar, which took place at the District Jail at Anjar near Hiriyadka in Udupi district on January 14, 2011, to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 20,000 each, under Section 302 of Indian Penal Code, on them.

Shanthi Bai, Principal Public Prosecutor, said here on Thursday that the Principal District and Sessions Court Judge, C.M. Joshi, had found the four persons guilty in the Vinod Shettigar murder.

The four persons sentenced in the case are Muthappa (36), Nagaraj Balegar (33), Sheikh Riaz (33) and Sharanappa (33).

The court had also sentenced these four persons to three years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 each under Section 326 (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of IPC, one year imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 2,000 each under Section 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of IPC, and one year imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 2,000 each under Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC, Ms. Shanthi Bai said.

Bengaluru, Apr 21: The Karnataka Government may spare its employees from salary cuts this month despite severe resources crunch it faces following steep fall in revenue collection due to the ongoing lockdown to fight the coronavirus, official sources said on Tuesday.

As of now, there is no problem with April salary and we can manage. But if May also turns out to be a wash-out (in terms of revenue collection), then the situation is going to be very tough, a senior Minister said.

Ministers and members of Karnataka Legislature are taking a 30 per cent pay-cut for a year from April 1 this year. Opposition Congress in the state has vehemently opposed any possible move to cut salaries of government employees.

You just cant even imagine, the Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa had told news agency in an interview earlier this month on the economic impact of the lock-down on the state's finances. Yediyurappa had also said that the government is now not in a position to implement Budget proposals, barring important ones, with all kinds of revenue collections having completely stopped following the lockdown.

The government recently said it proposes to regularise unauthorised properties in the state by imposing penalty, and also auction more than 12,000 corner sites belonging to the Bengaluru Development Authority, as part of resource mobilisation drive.

New Delhi, July 29: The government of India today announced Unlock 3.0, lifting of night curfew from August 1 and opening of yoga institutes and gymnasiums from August 5 while educational institutes will remain closed throughout August.

According to the Unlock 3.0 guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the lockdown in containment zones will be extended until August 30. The new guidelines will be in effect from August 1.

The operation of Metro rail and international flights will remain suspended. Cinema halls, swimming pools, entertainment parks, theatres, bars, auditoriums, assembly halls and similar places will remain shut. Large gatherings are also prohibited.

Yoga institutes and gymnasiums will start operating from August 5 for which the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will be issuing Standard Operating Procedures. 

Independence Day celebrations will be held with social distancing norms in place.

Restrictions on the movement of individuals during the night (Night curfew between 10 PM and 5 AM) have been removed.

According to the order, states have been given powers to prohibit certain activities outside containment zones or impose such restrictions as deemed necessary based on their assessment of the situation.

"However, there shall be no restriction on inter-state and intra-state movement of persons and goods. No separate permission/approval/e-permit will be required for such movements," the order said. 

In the previous two Unlock guidelines, the government had substantially opened various activities.

Mangaluru, May 4: The district administration has set up seven check-posts to monitor those entering Dakshina Kannada from other districts and states amidst coronavirus crisis.

The check-posts are located at up seven check-posts at Talapady, Hejamady, Gundya, Jalsoor, Charmadi, Naravi and Kallugundi. 

According to Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh, all those who enter the district will be screened. Those who come from outside the district and state will be asked to remain in quarantine. 

As the relaxation is announced for 12 hours, the public should be cautious while venturing out of the house. Wearing a mask in public is mandatory in addition to maintaining social distance. 

Further, she said of the 24 cases reported in the district, only four had symptoms of breathlessness and others were asymptomatic. Of the nine active cases in the district, the condition of one patient is serious while two are likely to be discharged from hospital shortly, said the DC.
