Mangaluru, Oct 18: In the sensational Prashanth Poojary murder case, Mangaluru CCB police have arrested one alleged main accused and three co-conspirators on Saturday.

The arrested have been identified as Mohammed Haneef (24), resident of Bajpe Adyapady, Mohammed Ilyas (27), resident of Moodbidri, Ibrahim Liyaqat (26), resident of Naringana in Bantwal taluk and Abdul Rasheed (39), resident of Kilpady. Mohammed Haneef is one of the main accused in the murder case.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner S Murugan said that the investigating police team had identified five other main accused involved in the case who were absconding. The actual execution of the crime was done by six persons, he said.

On interrogation, the four arrested have confessed their involvement in two separate assault cases on Ashok and Vasu in Moodbidri police station limits and Jaya Kotian in Bajpe police station limits. In these cases, the police teams have collected evidence against the accused in this regard, he informed.

Mr Murugan said that the motive seemed to be communal, since the victim Prashanth was an activist belonging to a Hindutva outfit. The crime was a misguided venture by the accused, sparked by enmity due to previous communal attacks in the taluk, he said, adding that the crime should not be interpreted as a communal attack.

He also said that the police had not recorded the statement of eyewitness Vaman Poojary who allegedly committed suicide few days after the murder of Prashanth. The death may not be due to pressure from the police. There is no record of calls from overseas or persons involved in the murder, he told media persons.

It may be recalled that Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar kateel and other Sangh Parivar leaders had claimed that Vaman Poojary had received calls from Pakistan before he committed suicide.

Mangaluru, Jan 15: Popular Front of India leader Mohammed Saqib came down heavily on Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha for justifying the Dec 19 firing which claimed two Muslim lives in the city.

He was addressing a mammoth crowd of around two lakh people, mostly Muslims, who had gathered at Shah Garden at Adyar in Mangaluru today to register their protest against CAA, NRP, NRC, besides police atrocities on Muslims in Mangaluru.

Criticising the way the commissioner handled the situation on December 19, he said the people have all the right to agitate when their citizenship is endangered.

“Two men lost their lives. Then Commissioner started releasing misleading videos (to justify the killing),” he said questioning the top cop: “Who are you? Are you a British?”

“What kind of doctor you are? You are a doctor in creating false stories,” he said whiling taking on the top cop for claiming that protesters had tried to storm the Mangaluru North Police Station.

Bengaluru, Feb 19: A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Karnataka High Court, seeking a stay on Anand Singh functioning as Minister of Forests, Environment and Ecology contending that there are criminal cases filed against him by the Ministry.

"A stay be granted prohibiting Anand Singh from functioning as the Cabinet Minister for the Ministry of Forests, Environment and Ecology. Any other order that the Honourable Court may deem fit in the interest of justice and equity," the PIL prays.

The petition, filed by advocate Vijay Kumar, said that the Chief Minister has allocated the portfolio of the Ministry of Forests, Environment and Ecology to Singh without considering the fact that there are several criminal faces filed against him by the Ministry.

It said that the allocation of the Ministry of Forests, Environment and Ecology portfolio to Singh is in the conflict of interest.

"The holding of the post of Cabinet minister for the Ministry of Forests, Environment and Ecology is against public interest and completely in conflict of interest as he has business for which the subject Ministry is the overseeing authority and further he will also have access to the case files which again is in conflict of interest," the PIL said.

PIL adds that "it is pertinent and absolutely necessary" to deny the incumbent from accessing files related to his cases and from taking any decisions which may provide him with pecuniary benefits through his businesses.

Bengaluru, Mar 23: Karnataka government today decided to go for complete lockdown. This includes the closure of all non essential government offices, suspension of all public transport services and banning of mass prayers in places of worships across the state.

Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had expressed the need for a complete lockdown like the Janta Curfew on Sunday. Going by this, there will be no government transport services at least till March 31 and as many as 19,000 government buses will be off the road.

The government also decided to cancel the famous Karaga festival. The CM said that all celebrations and functions will be called off along with mass prayers in mosques and churches.

The CM said that they have decided to procure 1,000 ventilators and 10 lakh face masks in addition to other health equipments.

Private hospitals have come forward to spare their doctors and nursing staff to attend to Covid-19 patients in government hospitals, the CM said.

Yediyurappa also said that he has directed the health department to paste notification on the houses of residents who are infected with coronavirus. This is being done after people with indelible seals and home quarantined are reported to be roaming freely. The notifications will help neighbours to keep an eye on them.

The CM said the government-run Indira Canteen will serve free food to the poor until the lockdown continues. He also said that action will be initiated against non essential shops that are open despite a directive to shut down.
