Furniture industry goes up in flames; children evacuated from 3 schools

Mangaluru, Feb 1: A furniture factory located in sensitive area at Konchady in Mangaluru was gutted in a fire accident on Monday.

Three education institutions, wherein hundreds of students study, are located close to the ill-fated Bhagya Jyothi Industries and Emerald Decor Pvt Ltd, a company of furniture and interior designing.

As soon as the fire began to engulf the factory, the managements of Vidya Nursery School, Vidya Higher Primary School and Indira Gandhi Memorial School evacuated the children as part of precautionary measures.

Fire tenders were alerted and they rushed to the spot, but by then the fire had spread. Several fire tenders and rescue personnel battled the blaze for a few hours to douse the flames.

Police said the estimated loss was around Rs 15 lakh.

Mangaluru, May 15: Mohammed Kana, son of late Ismail Kana and grandson of late Dr M S Bapanad Mulki passed away in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia due to heart attack on Thursday. He was 57.

Hailing from Mangaluru, Mohammed Kana was working in Saudi Arabia for past 30 years. He is survived by his wife, son and a daughter.

He was involved in various social and welfare activities in India and Saudi Arabia. His tragic demise has left huge vacuum in his family and community at large.

Mangaluru, Jun 29: Senior IPS officer Vikash Kumar Vikash today took over as the new commissioner of police of Mangaluru city.

He replaced Dr P S Harsha, who was recently transferred and posted as the Deputy Inspector General and Commissioner of Information and Public Relations.

Before coming to Mangaluru as city police chief, Vikash Kumar was the Deputy Inspector General of Police and Commander of Anti Naxal Force.

He had also served as the superintendent of police of Chikkamagaluru district.

Mangaluru, May 4: Bunder Shramika Sangha (BSS) general secretary B K Imthiyaz on Monday urged the district administration to restart Bengre ferry and passenger boat services as it has affected the wholesale market in Old Port.

A majority of the labourers engaged in loading and unloading at the wholesale market in Old Bunder hail from Bengre area. Without the ferry service, the labourers cannot come to work, said Imthiyaz.

He said no positive cases had been reported from Bengre area. Thus, the district administration should give permission for operating ferry services between 7 am and 12 noon.
