Gadag becomes Karnataka's first fully WiFi-enabled city

Gadag, Mar 17: Gadag city on Wednesday took a big step towards becoming the first in the State to offer Free Wi-Fi facility to people with the commissioning of as many as 10 hotspots to begin with.

WiFiSpeaker Kagodu Thimmappa dedicated the hotspot facility at a programme at the District Stadium here on Wednesday. District in-charge Minister H.K. Patil was present.

Following an initiative taken by Mr. Patil, the district administration and the Gadag Betageri Urban Development Authority, (which is sponsoring the Wi-Fi facility), Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is offering high speed Wi-Fi services at important locations in Gadag Betageri free to the general public.

In the first phase, 25 hotspot locations have been chosen, including the industrial estate, zoo, major colleges, new and old bus stations, Deputy Commissioner's office, new court complex.

Speaking about the initiative, Mr. Patil said: “The new generation, mainly the student community, is dependent on mobile phones and laptops and Internet facility for several works and studies. Offering free Wi-Fi service is an initiative aimed at reaching out to the younger generation. We hope that they make the best use of the facility.”

Under the facility, an individual user will get up to 2 mbps speed and 200 MB each day with each access point supporting up to 300 to 400 users. All social websites such as Facebook and YouTube can be accessed.

General Manager of BSNL, Dharwad Telecom District, Vivek Jaiswal, and Deputy General Manager (Marketing) V.M. Kanakeri hoped that the free Wi-Fi services will increase people's participation in governance.

Mangaluru, Apr 19: In order to boost the Coast Guard's (CG) surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities on the country's west coast in Karnataka, CG OPV Varaha and CG Dornier 785 ex Kochi were pressed to service to undertake extensive surveillance.

"Both seawards and aerial surveillance of Karnataka coast line will be undertaken from Sunday," said S Babu Venkatesh, Commander, Coast Guard, Karnataka. The surveillance will be an air-sea coordinated operation.

The Coast Guard ships and aircraft maintained extensive search in the area for intercepting any suspect vessel. Indian Coast Guard ships classified various contacts in the area and kept them under constant surveillance.

Mangaluru, Jan 9: A forest guard was arrested caught red-hand by Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials while accepting Rs 3,000 bribe from a person for granting permission to cut Mahogany trees for his personal use, a statement said on Thursday.

According to the statement, the arrested identified as N Sudheer sought bribe of Rs 15,000 from Gopalakrishna Herale, a resident of Beltangady.

Mr Herale, in a complaint, lodged on January 7 said that he had sought a permit from the forest department for cutting of Mahogany trees purchased by him.

Bengaluru, Jan 3: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called on young scientists of India to "Innovate, Patent, Produce and Prosper," and said these four steps would lead our country towards faster development. The Prime Minister also stressed on the need to transform the landscape of Indian science, technology and innovation.

"The growth story of India depends on its success in the science and technology sector. There is a need to transform the landscape of Indian science, technology and innovation," Modi said.

Speaking after inaugurating the 107th Session of Indian Science Congress, he said, "My motto for the young scientists in this country is -Innovate, Patent, Produce and Prosper. These four steps will lead our country towards faster development."

"If we innovate we will patent and that in turn will make our production smoother and when we take these products to the people of our country, I'm sure they will prosper," he said, adding that innovation for the people and by the people is the direction of our new India. The Prime Minister also said he was happy to learn that India's ranking has improved in the Global Innovation Index to 52.

"Our programmes have created more technology business incubators in the last five years than in the previous 50 years. I congratulate our scientists for this achievement," he added.
