Mangaluru, Jan 8: As many as four police personnel, including a sub-inspector, were injured in a communal clash at the district jail in Kodialbail on Monday. Ten inmates were also injured.

A fight broke out between Mithun, who has been arrested in connection with the stabbing at Kalladka, and Sadik, who is in jail in the Sharath Madivala murder case, police sources said. While Mithun is imprisoned in Barrack B for the past six months, Sadik is housed in Barrack A since August.

The district jail in Mangaluru is perhaps the only prison in the country to have separate barracks for Hindus and Muslims.

Sources said a cold war has been going on between the two communities for the past several months. Matters came to a head on Monday evening during dinner break which is also the time for visitors. Around 7pm, inmates of barrack A stormed into barrack B by damaging the door.

A case has been lodged at Barke police station here.

Bengaluru, Aug 8: Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Saturday demanded that the state government drop its plan to provide doorstep delivery of liquor.

"After faltering in mopping up revenue, the state government is mulling over allowing doorstep delivery of liquor by enabling online sales and starting new MSIL liquor shops in rural areas. I demand that the state government drop its plans," he tweeted.

"I came to know that the excise commissioner is keen to hold talks with a private firm to enable online sale of liquor. The government should back out from such a foolish decision. Otherwise, agitation is inevitable," Kumaraswamy said.

He said opening new liquor shops or online delivery will ruin the health of society.

"Post-COVID outbreak and subsequent lockdown, people are facing financial distress, struggling to lead day-to-day life.

The government must withdraw such an imprudent decision to deliver liquor at doorsteps. Opening new liquor shops or the decision of online delivery in times of distress like this will spoil society's health.

It is not fair for the government to fill its coffers by robbing people's money," he said in a series of tweets.

Udupi, Jun 5: Senior BJP leader and Lok Sabha member Shobha Karandlje accused members of Tablighi Jamaat of spreading Coronavirus, particularly in slums, in Bengaluru.

Speaking to newsmen here Friday night, she said that the members had intentionally spread the virus in Siddique Layout and Padarayanapura. Members had hatched a conspiracy to destroy the country. She would raise the issue with the central government.

She said that New Delhi and Maharashtra were responsible for rising Covid-19 cases in the country. Highlighting the programmes, introduced by Modi-led NDA government for the past six years, she blamed Covid-19 for the collapse of the economy. But for Covid-19 Modi government at the Centre would have been a leader in the world,” she added.

She said 13,541 people, stranded in other States and foreign countries, had returned to Udupi. “We have sufficient beds in the district to tackle the situation. But if more people decide to travel to Udupi, arranging quarantine facilities would be a huge challenge,” she added.
