New Delhi, Dec 20: Scores of protesters, including the parents of the December 16 gangrape victim, were detained by the police after they staged a protest against the release of the juvenile convict near India Gate here today.979071 Wallpaper2

The juvenile convict in the December 16 gangrape case was today released and sent to an NGO in Delhi, said a source.

The protest started around 5 PM and within half-an-hour, a large number of protesters comprising mostly students and activists gathered at a stretch on Rajpath, blocking the road.

Soon, several police teams, including women officials, were deployed to disperse the protesters, who were shouting slogans against the central and Delhi governments.

Asha Devi, the mother of the paramedic student who was gangraped in a moving bus, had to be convinced and put inside a bus along with her husband, Badri Singh Pandey, and other protesters.

"How many more rapes, how many more murders will have to take place for the government to change laws related to juveniles. I want (Prime Minister Narendra) Modiji to consider giving us two minutes (for a meeting)," said Asha Devi.

Referring to the release of the juvenile, she said: "Who should have been put behind bars has been allowed to walk out free, while we, who have suffered, are being chased by police. First we were stopped at Jantar Mantar, and then we managed to reach here (India Gate).

"I will not get inside the bus today," she kept saying, as she was being escorted by women police officials.

Pandey, the victim's father, said that the police action was not justified and that their three-year-long battle for justice has gone in vain.

"We requested them (the protesters) not to assemble at the high-security area and when they refused, they were detained under Section 144 CrPC," said a senior police officer.

The release became possible notwithstanding the Delhi Commission for Women's late night effort to stall it as the Supreme Court post-midnight held a sitting and refused to stay the release. In its order, the Supreme Court declined to stop the release of the juvenile offender and posted the matter for hearing tomorrow.

The parents, along with around 40 protesters, were detained yesterday too, after they staged a demonstration near the correction facility in north Delhi, where the juvenile convict was lodged.

They were released in a while. The police, however, maintained that they had only removed the parents for their safety and escorted them back to their residence.

New Delhi, Jan 18: The Supreme Court Friday refused to entertain a PIL seeking conferment of 'Bharat Ratna' on Mahatma Gandhi saying that people hold the father of the nation in “high esteem”, beyond any formal recognition.

A bench, comprising Chief Justice S A Bobde and justices B R Gavai and Surya Kant, however asked petitioner Anil Dutta Sharma to give representation to the central government in this regard.

“Mahatma Gandhi is the father of nation and people hold him in high esteem, beyond any formal recognition,” the bench said.

The issue of directing the government to award Bharat Ratna to the father of the nation was not a “justiciable issue”, it said.

The bench however said that it agreed with the sentiments of the petitioner for granting official decoration to Mahatma Gandhi.

Disposing of the petition, the top court said, “We will allow you to give a representation to the Centre in this regard.”

Sharma, in his PIL, had sought a direction to the government to give “official decoration” to Mahatma Gandhi to honour him for the contribution to the nation.

Daman, Mar 3: A BJP councillor was shot dead on Monday in the Union Territory of Daman, police said.

Salim Memon was sitting in his motorcycle showroom when three to four unidentified persons shot four to five bullets after asking a visitor there to move out, an official said quoting eye-witnesses.

While fleeing, they also shot two rounds close to this visitor who was standing outside, he said.

"Memon was rushed to a hospital in Marwad area but was declared dead on arrival. CCTV footage is being scanned to nab the culprits," said Daman Superintendent of Police Vikramjit Singh.

Memon was elected to Daman municipality as a Congress candidate but then switched over to the BJP.

Sources said Memon, who also has a land brokerage business, had come out of jail a few months back in connection with a case of rivalry.

Patna, Jan 12: Prashant Kishor, national vice-president of the Janata Dal (United), a key ally of the BJP-led NDA, has thanked Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi and former AICC chief Rahul Gandhi for their support in opposing CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and NRC (National Register of Citizens).

Perceived as one of the closest associates of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who is also the party’s national president, PK (as Prashant is fondly called) also assured the two top Congress leaders that the contentious legislation would not be implemented in Bihar where JD (U) is ruling the State with the support of the BJP.

“I join my voice with all to thank #Congress leadership for their formal and unequivocal rejection of #CAA_NRC. Both @rahulgandhi and @priyankagandhi deserve special thanks for their efforts on this count….also would like to reassure to all – CAA/NRC won’t be implemented in Bihar,” tweeted PK on Sunday.

The development assumes significance as a day back, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, chaired by Sonia Gandhi, had strongly opposed CAA/NRC/NPR as it was aimed at “sinister design of the present regime to divide Indian people into religious lines.”

The latest tweet by PK is also being seen as a rebuff to the BJP, which again recently reiterated that “the BJP should project its own chief ministerial candidate during the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections.”

The JD (U) had taken umbrage over such provocative statements by BJP leaders and asked the saffron camp to rein in its ‘loudmouths’ as BJP chief Amit Shah had already made it clear that the next Assembly polls in Bihar would be fought under the leadership of Nitish.

Of late, PK has been quite vocal about his opposition to the Centre’s policies, particularly the contentious issues of NRC and CAA. Besides, he even dubbed senior BJP leader Sushil Modi as the man who became Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister due to ‘circumstances’ as the BJP was decisively decimated during the 2015 Assembly elections.

Nitish never reprimanded PK for his jibe against Modi, thereby giving rise to speculations whether Bihar was again heading for a political churning ahead of Assembly polls slated for October this year.
