Bengaluru, Apr 16: Hindutva leader and gunrunner K T Naveen Kumar, arrested for his alleged role in the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh will now undergo neuropsychological tests. Special Investigation Team officials will be taking him to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Ahmedabad for the tests.

The 37-year-old founder of the Hindu Yuva Sene is currently lodged in the Parappana Agrahara Central Jail in Bengaluru.

“The FSL in Gandhinagar has agreed to carry out the required tests between April 16 and April 30,” said a senior SIT official.

The third Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court had given permission for the tests on March 12 after Naveen gave his consent.

The police will most likely take him to Ahmedabad on April 16, said sources. Soon after he was informed of this development, Naveen withdrew his consent.

He wrote to the jailer seeking his help to inform the court that he was no longer willing to undergo the tests.

In his letter, he alleged that the police had coerced him to give his consent to the magistrate with the promise that they would help him get bail.

However, senior SIT officials said that his latest retraction will not hold as he had already agreed to it in court. “We will conduct polygraph and brain electrical oscillations signature profiling (brain mapping) which will help our investigation,” the official added.

When he was first produced in court Naveen had refused to be subjected to the tests. But a few days later, he deposed before the magistrate and said that he was ready to cooperate with the police.

Naveen’s lawyer Veda Murthy has asked permission to be present during the tests. “I’ve asked the SIT to inform me of the dates and will approach the court for more clarity on this,” Mr. Murthy said.

Naveen was initially arrested by the Central Crime Branch on February 19 for ‘illegally’ possessing a firearm and fifteen .32 calibre live bullets.

The SIT arrested him on March 9 for his alleged involvement in the Gauri Lankesh case and also booked him for allegedly plotting to assassinate writer and rationalist K.S. Bhagavan.

Cops arrested one guy and put evrything upon him. The main goon or leader will be safe always. Actually the leader is more dangeruous than this goon. He has more power both political and money. He might have some motive behind this murder. So he should get arrested and punished

New Delhi, Jul 3: Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) in Karnataka have emerged as a "crucial pillar in the state's success" in combating Covid-19, the Union Health Ministry said on Friday.

Acknowledging and praising their work, the ministry said they have been actively participating in household surveys in the state, screening inter-state passengers, migrant workers and others in the community for symptoms of the infection,

“Around 42,000 ASHAs have emerged as a crucial pillar in the state's success” in combating Covid-19, the ministry said.

"Recognizing the increased vulnerability of certain population groups to Covid-19, in a one-time survey to identify households with the elderly, persons with co-morbidities, and immune-compromised individuals, about 1.59 crore households were covered," the ministry said in a statement.

ASHAs regularly monitor such high-risk groups in their area with a periodicity of follow-up visits varying from once a day in the containment zones to once every 15 days in other areas, it said.

They also visit the houses of persons complaining influenza-like-illness (ILI) symptoms and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI), besides high-risk individuals who have called the state health department helpline numbers, the ministry said.

ASHAs are a part of the Rural Task Force, headed by Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) at the Gram Panchayat level, for addressing public grievances on both Covid-19 and non-Covid-19 related services.

ASHAs are trained female community health activists selected from the village itself and accountable to it. They are trained to work as an interface between the community and the public health system.

In the urban areas too, they have been at the forefront of dissemination of various awareness activities in fever clinics and swab collection centres in urban areas.

They have also actively screened cases of ILI and SARI in urban areas. They are also part of the screening teams at international and interstate check-posts.

Karnataka has reported 272 Covid-19 deaths and 18,016 cases, according to the health ministry data updated at 8 AM.

Bengaluru, Feb 19: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa is facing major dissent within the party and the BJP MLAs held a meeting on Tuesday night at former Chief Minister Jagdish Shettar's residence to discuss the functioning of Yediyurappa-led government, said BJP sources.

According to BJP sources, some of the unhappy BJP leaders and MLAs met last night at Shetter's place and expressed that they are not satisfied with Yediyurappa's leadership.

Last night's meeting shows that party leaders are looking to bring down Yediyurappa from the Chief Minister's post by sending a clear message to the high command that Yediyurappa is incapable of continuing as the CM, said BJP sources.

Other sources in BJP have also asserted that BJP leadership in Karnataka is looking for a "leader" who can lead the party in upcoming elections which is going to be held after three years. At this point of time, it's crucial for BJP to promote second-line leadership.

Meanwhile, a letter is being circulated in the BJP party forum and over social media against Chief Minister Yediyurappa's leadership.

It looks like the same team which is unhappy with Yediyurappa's leadership is trying to convey the same message to their high command. The letter which is being circulated says to be written by one of these leaders' groups against Yediyurappa and his son Vijayendra.

On this, Congress leader Ramalinga Reddy told media, "Maybe the letter is written by the same MLAs because after the expansion of Karnataka cabinet so many leaders from BJP were kept out."

"There is a lot of discontent among BJP MLAs that the ones who have toiled for the party day and night have been neglected from the cabinet expansion. This will definitely result in destabilisation in the government," said Eshwar Khandre, KPCC Working President.

Now party high command needs to look into Karnataka leadership to manage the government in the state.

"Now BJP leadership in Karnataka and Delhi need to look into the matter and need to solve the issue after cabinet expansion," said a BJP leader.
