Bengaluru, Nov 24: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the murder of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh has submitted an additional chargesheet against 18 accused in a special court naming Sanatan Sanstha behind the killing.

Special Public Prosecutor in the case S Balan said that a crime syndicate under the Sanatan Sanstha was behind the murder and all the accused arrested in the case were members of this organisation. Gauri Lankesh was shot dead in front of her house in Rajarajeshwari Nagar on September 5, 2017. He said the probe revealed that the accused were planning to eliminate Gauri Lankesh for five years.

Four policemen carried a metal trunk containing the 9,235-page charge sheet to the special court for Karnataka Control of Organised Crime Act (KCOCA) on Friday, November 23, evening and submitted it before principal city civil and sessions court Judge Shivashankar B Amarannavar.

"We have also sought permission for further investigation," MN Anuchet, chief investigating officer, SIT, said.

The first chargesheet in the case was filed in May this year. Maddur-based gun-runner KT Naveen Kumar was the only accused named in it.

The second chargesheet contains details of 18 other accused, including those arrested from Maharashtra. It explains how all 18 accused came together with the intention to kill Gauri Lankesh, hatched the plot and finally executed it.

Of 19 accused in the case, 18 have been arrested. The only accused at large is Nihal alias Dada. The chargesheet copy draws from mobile call detail records of prime suspects like Amol Kale and Sudhanva Gondelkar, Pune residents who played a crucial role in the killing. It contains confessions of the accused, SIT sources said.

Sources added, "Confessions of alleged shooter Parashuram Waghmore, alleged trainer Rajesh D Bangera and Belagavi businessman Bharat Kurne, who sheltered the accused, are comparatively large and run into over 30 pages each," they said, adding "The confessions of the accused run into more than 500 pages."

The chargesheet also explained the larger conspiracy was to strategically eliminate 43 other liberals and rationalists in Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra, some of whom survived murder attempts.

The SIT observed that the accused allegedly had links with a Goa-based right-wing organisation. “Maharashtrabased men like Amol Kale and Amit Digwekar had a strong relationship with the organisation,” the chargesheet said.

302 (murder), 118 (concealing design to commit offence,) 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 35 (whenever an act, which is criminal only by reason of it being done with a criminal knowledge or intention). The SIT filed the first chargesheet on May 29. The 650-page chargesheet named KT Naveen Kumar of Maddur as the accused who had ample knowledge of the killing. The SIT alleged that Gauri was shot dead due to her strong anti-Hindutva views.

Bengaluru, Apr 15: Karnataka and five other states have their coronavirus antibody test kits stuck in China because of the country's new policy of getting clearance from their government before a company exports its products.

Singapore-based Sensing Self Ltd and China’s Wondfo are the only companies that have cleared Pune's National Institute of Virology (NIV)’s validation for rapid antibody test kit.

Dr CN Manjunath, Director, Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, and nodal officer for COVID-19 lab testing, Karnataka, said, "Inventory is ready in Hong Kong Airport. Karnataka's consignment is stuck with five other states' consignments: Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Meghalaya. On April 1 or 3, China's policy changed saying any exports going out of China has to be certified by the Chinese government."

Bengaluru, Feb 21: Amulya Leona, a college student, who raised to pro-Pakistan slogans to embarrass organisers of a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) here on Thursday evening, has been charged with sedition.

The student-activist, who was allowed to talk on stage, suddenly raised pro-Pakistan slogans. She was arrested by police after All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi snatched her mike.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Ramesh Bannoth confirmed the girl has been charged with sedition, provoking enmity between groups, and intentional insult to provoke breach of peace.

It was just after Mr. Owaisi’s arrival on the stage at Freedom Park here that the 19-year-old student was asked to speak. After preliminary remarks, she suddenly shouted “Pakistan zindabad” thrice, leaving the crowd and organisers stunned.

Some of the organisers rushed to her and tried to take the mike away and stop her from speaking further. Mr. Owaisi too joined in and snatched the mike. Holding on to the mike, the girl then went on to shout “Hindustan zindabad” twice, before a posse of police personnel and organisers whisked her away from the stage

Soon after the student was taken away, a visibly upset Mr. Owaisi told the crowd: “Whatever has been spoken [by the girl] is wrong. Neither my party nor I has any connection with it. As long as we are alive, we will be raising Bharat zindabad slogans. Never had we any relationship with Pakistan nor will we have anything in future,” he announced.

He further stated: “This is condemnable. The organisers should not have invited such people to this place. If I had known that these kind of things would be said here, I would not have come here.”

It is unfortunate that the organisers have invited such people and a wrong message is going out, he said. “Now, BJP has got an opportunity and will blame me,” he added.

Every speaker, who took the podium after the incident, condemned the pro-Pakistan slogans raised by Amulya.

Janata Dal (S) councillor representing Gurappanapalya, Imran Pasha, one of the organisers of the protest under “Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Isayi Federation”, claimed that they had not invited the “activist” and were not aware that she would be speaking from the stage. Mr. Pasha said that such statements were “a deliberate attempt to drive a wedge between Hindus and Muslims”.

Meanwhile, the BJP State unit tweeted, “Truth is that protests against CAA are a joint venture between Pakistan and anti-National forces led by INC India.” In a press release, BJP State unit president Nalin Kumar Kateel termed this as an “anti-national act” and urged the police to take action.
