Udaipur, Oct 10: Four members of the family of a private school teacher died on Monday after consuming poison. The family comprised Vinod Sharma (the teacher aged 42), his wife, daughter and son. All of them died in the hospital.

Sharma, a resident of Jyoti Nagar in Khempura near the glass factory under the Pratapnagar police station, allegedly consumed food laced with pesticides along with his wife Kalpana, 40, daughter Anju, 22, and son Nikhil, 19.

According to neighbours and close friends, the family decided to take the extreme step after the elder daughter allegdly eloped with her lover from another caste on Monday morning.

Though the neighbours rushed the family to the hospital, Kalpana and Nikhil were declared dead on arrival. Others breathed their last during the treatment.

"Neighbours and friends said the family may have decided to commit suicide as their elder daughter had eloped with her lover on Monday morning. During investigations, we found that the girl had an inter-caste marriage some time back. But the family was not aware of it till Monday when the girl left home without informing anyone," DySP Bhagwat Singh Hingar told a news paper.

This came as a big shock for the family who tried to locate the girl. However, later in the afternoon, they allegedly decided to end their lives.

Sharma didn't go to school on Monday and put up a board outside their home cancelling tuitions for the day. "We found an empty bottle of poison and four glasses in the house. They drank poison and vomited all over," Hingar said.

Death note

A note found at the victims’ house said they were committing suicide of their own free will. “We are committing suicide and after our death, our property will belong to my brother Purshotam,” a note read.

Shillong, May 9: The poisonous mushrooms that killed six people at a remote village in Meghalaya's West Jaintia Hills district have been identified as Amanita phalloides, commonly known as the 'Death Cap', a senior official said on Saturday.

Six people, including a 14-year-old girl, of Lamin village along the India-Bangladesh border in Amlarem civil sub-division died after consuming wild mushrooms they collected from a nearby forest late last month.

The wild mushroom has been identified as Amanita phalloides and is hepatotoxic as it directly affects the liver, state Director of Health Services (MI) Dr Aman War told PTI.

He said it has been established after an investigation that the cause of the deaths was the poisonous mushrooms.

At least 18 persons from three families were taken ill after consuming the mushrooms.

The symptoms after consuming the poisonous fungus include vomiting, headache and unconsciousness, the senior doctor said.

Most of those taken ill, including a pregnant woman, have already recovered and gone home. Therefore, people can survive as it depends on the amount of poison that you have consumed. Only one person was unaffected, maybe he did not consume much, he said.

Three people are still undergoing treatment and are recovering. Two of them are at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) and one in Woodland Hospital, Dr War said.

He said the health department can only appeal to the people, especially those in the rural areas, to refrain from eating wild mushrooms, while the horticulture department should take measures to create awareness.
