Girl Went To Buy Biscuits; Raped, Strangled, Left To Die In Odisha School

Bhubaneswar, Apr 23: A six-year-old girl in Odisha who had gone to buy biscuits was raped, strangled and left inside a school campus in a village in Cuttack district on Saturday. The girl has multiple injuries and is admitted in a hospital. Her condition is said to be critical. A 25-year-old man was arrested on Sunday.

Police said the girl had gone to buy biscuits on Saturday. As her family waited for her to return home, there as a power cut in the village. With no sign of the girl, her worried family members and a group of villagers set out to look for her.

"After a frantic search for over an hour the girl was traced lying unconscious and without clothes in the school campus with blood oozing from her head and mouth," the police said. The alleged rapist had left her in that state presuming she was dead, police said.

The six-year-old was immediately taken to a private nursing home nearby and later moved to Cuttack's SCB Medical College and Hospital. Doctors said she has deep injuries on her head, face, neck, chest and private parts.

The alleged rapist lives in the girl's village of Jagannathpur and has been charged for rape and attempt to murder. "A case... was registered on the basis of a written complaint filed by the girl"s grandfather," police inspector DK Mallick said.

Odisha health minister Pratap Jena, who visited the girl in the hospital, said a team of at least 13 doctors from several departments are treating her.

Two other rapes were reported in Odisha over the weekend when the the centre cleared an emergency executive order to introduce death penalty for those found raping minors.

A four-year-old girl was raped allegedly by a minor, her neighbor, in a village in Odisha's Kendrapara district. Police said she was raped near the  Paika riverbed last Friday allegedly by a school boy. Sexual assault was confirmed after medical examination of both the girl and the boy.

In another case, a 30-year-old man was arrested for allegedly kidnapping and raping a Class 6 student was two days in Odisha's Kalahandi district. According to the complaint, the student had gone to her uncle's house on April 17 to attend a family function.

While returning, she was abducted by  a man named Munna Naik and taken to his house, where he kept the girl for two days and allegedly raped her. The man later abandoned the girl on the roadside on Thursday evening.

The girl narrated the ordeal to her family members after which a complaint was filed.

New Delhi, May 26: A massive fire broke out on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday in the slums of the Tughlaqabad area in south east Delhi in which over 250 shanties were gutted, however, no one was injured, fire officials said.

Atul Garg, Chief Fire Officer, told IANS, "We came to know about the fire in the slums around 12.15 a.m. following which 28 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. And the fire was brought under control by 4 a.m."

He said, the Tughalaqbad slums have over 500 shanties, out of which over 250 have been destroyed in the fire.

He said, it took time for the fire tenders to reach the spot as it was on the hills, but the fire was doused within four hours and by 8 a.m. cooling off procedure has also been completed.

When asked if there is any casualty in the incident, he said, "No injury or casualty has been reported."

He also said that as of now the actual reason for the fire is not known. "But we are trying to find out the reason of the fire," Garg added.

South East Deputy Commissioner of Police R.P. Meena said, "In the night it seemed that almost 500 shanties were gutted. However, in the morning it became clear that only 250 shanties have been gutted in fire."

He said, the South East district police after receiving the call also rushed the ambulances and the local police team in the area for rescue operation. Meena further said that very few people were residing in the shanties, and the people came out of their shanties after the fire broke out in one of them.

Mandya, Jun 14: In a tragic incident, a woman and her two children were drowned in a pond at Beeranahalli village in Nagamangala taluk of this district on Sunday.

Police said that the deceased have been identified as Geeta (40), and her two children Savita(19) and Soumya(14).

Savaitha is a degree student while Soumya was studying in 9th standard. The trio drowned in a pond where they had gone to wash their cows. The locals rushed to the spot and tried to rescue them but could not save.

Meerut: The licence of a private hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut has been suspended after a video showing its staff member providing fake Covid-19 report had gone viral.

"A video had gone viral in Meerut. We have registered a case in this regard. We have suspended the licence of the nursing home. Today, we have sealed it also. Strict action will be taken against anybody who will do something like this in this time of crisis,” said Anil Dhingra, District Magistrate, Meerut.

In the video, the person can be heard saying that they provide Covid-19 negative report for Rs 2,500, Dhingra stated.

Meerut CMO Rajkumar said, “In the video, a man from the hospital can be heard saying that he can arrange COVID-19 negative report and the person can get operation or other things done. We have identified the man. We have suspended the licence of the hospital and an FIR has been registered.”
