GMU’s ‘Global Day 2017’ celebrates cultural diversity

Gulf Medical University (GMU), the leading medical university in the region owned and operated by Thumbay Group celebrated its annual ‘Global Day 2017’on Friday, 10th March 2017. The event, held at the university grounds in Ajman had around 3000 visitors including the university studentsand staff as well as their friends and relatives. Every year, GMU celebrates the Global Day, which provides the students a platform to display the essence of their ethnicities and cultures.

The Global Day celebrations were inaugurated by Prof. Gita Ashok Raj - Provost of GMU, in the presence of the Deans of GMU’s colleges.Accompanied by the Deans, she toured the country pavilions where students had exhibited the food and costumes, as well as other exhibits relevant to their culture and history. Appreciating the students for their efforts, she said that the annual Global Day was GMU’s way of bringing together students, faculty, staff and their families to celebrate the University’s ‘Unity in Diversity’. The venue was also visited by Mr. ThumbayMoideen - Founder, President of the Board of Governors of GMU.

The GMU campus was gleaming with a variety of hues as the students, who hail from as many as 75 nationalities, were dressed in their respective traditional attires. Students also performed on stage, entertaining the audience with some great displays of talent. Individual country pavilions set-up at the venue presented the national heritage of the respective country and treated visitors to some delicious ethnic food. Various competitions were held, such as selection of the best pavilion, food, hospitality, teamwork, country performances, as well as talent and fashion shows.

Prof. Gita Ashok Raj awarded the prizes to the competition winners. Iraq and UAE students won the Overall Champions prize.

Riyadh, Apr 20: Six more people have died in Saudi Arabia after contracting coronavirus as 1,122 new coronavirus cases were reported on Monday.

The Saudi health ministry said that total number of cases in the Kingdom had increased to 10,484. It also recorded 92 new recoveries, raising the total to 1,490.

The ministry said precautionary measures shall remain to limit the virus spread.

Dubai, Apr 27: Saudi Arabia has reported 1,289 new Covid-19 cases on April 27, its Ministry of Health tweeted.

Of the newly diagnosed cases, Jeddah recorded 294 infections, followed by Makkah (218) and Madinah (202).

The ministry also confirmed five additional coronavirus-induced deaths, spiking the total death toll to 144.

Since the outbreak of the virus strain in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year, Saudi Arabia has reported a total of 18,811 Covid-19 infections.

As many as 2,531 patients have till now recovered from the virus.

Oman
The sultanate registered 51 new Covid-19 cases on April 27, including 37 nationals and 14 expatriates, spiking the total number of infections to 2,049, Oman News Agency tweeted.

Meanwhile, 10 coronavirus-related deaths have been confirmed in the country.

Qatar
The Ministry of Public Health has reported 957 Covid-19 cases among the 3,420 people tested in the last 24 hours.

As many as 85,709 people have been tested for the virus across the country.

The total number of Covid-19 infections since the outbreak has now risen to 11,244.

Ajman, Apr 5: A bakery worker in Ajman has been detained for spitting in the bread dough as he prepared bread at the bakery, police said.

The General Command of Ajman Police arrested the Asian worker in coordination with Ajman Municipality after investigators suggested that he intentionally spat in the dough while preparing bread at a bakery which is located in Ajman.

Lt. Col. Muhammad Mubarak Al-Ghafli, Director of Al-Jarf Al-Shamel Police Station, said a team from police had immediately gone to arrest the worker after receiving a report from the municipality confirming that the man spat in the bread dough.

Officials said a customer had filmed the Asian as he spat in the dough while preparing the bread at the bakery during the evening.

The customer then filed a complaint to the municipality with the supporting evidence of a video as the worker was doing the buzzer act.

Police said the man was taken for for psychological examination as he's being prepared to be referred to the public prosecution.

Meanwhile, the bakery has been shut down by the municipality for violating food hygiene and public health rules.

Lt. Col. Al-Ghafli has appealed to the public to report persons or any acts that could harm the health and safety of the public.
