Goa CM Manohar Parrikar, 63, dies after prolonged illness

Panaji, Mar 17: Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar passed away on Sunday evening after a prolonged illness. Parrikar was 63.

Manohar Parrikar was undergoing treatment over the past one year for a serious pancreatic ailment.

Manohar Parrikar's health worsened over the past two days. The former defence minister's health has been fluctuating for the past one year.

Manohar Parrikar has been in and out of the hospital over the past few months. Parrikar also visited the US for treatment.

Till the last of his days, Manohar Parrikar worked to the best of his abilities and even presented the state budget while still battling his illness and with tubes attached to his mouth.

Manohar Parrikar even attended political events and addressed party workers and remained in the public domain as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gears up for the Lok Sabha elections next month.

Manohar Parrikar joined the RSS in his youth after graduating from IIT.

In his last days, Manohar Parrikar also found himself tied up in the Rafale controversy as Congress and some media houses brought up old documents from the time when he was the defence minister.

Before going back to Goa, Manohar Parrikar joined the Modi Cabinet as the defence minister.

Bengaluru, Jun 18: With Karnataka observing 'Mask Day' today, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said that the state has organised a walk from Vidhana Soudha to Cubbon Park to create awareness about the importance of wearing a mask as a preventive measure against COVID-19.

"We are celebrating 'Mask Day' at all district headquarters today. We have organised a walk from Vidhana Soudha (to Cubbon Park) to create awareness about the importance of wearing a mask as a preventive measure against COVID-19," Yediyurappa told media persons here.

Earlier, the Chief Minister has said that film actors and sports personalities will take part in the event and it will be celebrated in all taluks as well.

"We will take strict action against those who are not maintaining social distancing. A fine of Rs 200 will be imposed on those for not wearing a mask in public places," he had said.

As many as 7,530 people have detected positive for COVID-19 in Karnataka, of which 94 people have succumbed to the infection till date, as per the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry.

Managluru, May 15: Kannadigas in Saudi Arabia deserve more attention from the government amidst covid-19 crisis as they remit huge amount of money to their home state and ultimately get no benefit, opined U T Khader, Mangaluru MLA.

The former minister held a video conference with stranded Kannadigas in Saudi Arabia on May 15 and assured to do his best to convince the Centre to operate more repatriation flights from Saudi Arabia to Karnataka. 

He also said that he would urge the chief minister of Karnataka to announce a separate rehabilitation package for Indian expatriates who have lost their jobs in Gulf countries amidst covid-19 lockdown.

Mr Khader also interacted with two medical emergency patients and promised them to inform the Indian embassy in Riyadh to facilitate their homeward journey via Dammam-Bengaluru flight in the second phase of Vande Bharat Mission. 

Mr Khader expressed regret over the inept handling of passengers from Dubai at Mangaluru International Airport on May 12 and said that next batch of passengers would not face such problems on arrival.

Mangaluru, Feb 15: Dense fog formation and poor visibility at the runway forced to delay and diversions of some flights arriving and take off at the Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) on Saturday.

Flights take off and landings were suspended from 0700 hours am to 1030 hours.

Many flights to land in the morning were diverted.
