Gold bars seized at Mangalore International Airport; One arrested

Mangalore, Jan 30: Customs officials at the Mangalore International Airport seized 11 gold ingots weighing 195.620 grams and valued at Rs 5,86,860, on Thursday from a passenger.

During a routine check, customs department officials grew suspicious about the movement of a passenger, Mohammed Haneefa Bedira Sulaiman, a resident of Vidyanagar in Kasaragod district and on searching him, they found six bars concealed in a decorative show-piece.

Haneefa, who arrived from Dubai by Air India Express flight IX 384, was taken into custody and is being interrogated.

Mangaluru, Feb 11: BJ Puttaswamy, chairman of the State Planning Board stated that the detailed project report (DPR) to develop the Mangaluru-Karwar fisheries road at a cost of Rs 780 crores has been submitted to the state government and approval for it by the Coastal Development Authority (CDA) is pending.

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, he said the new developments done and in those in the future for the coastal districts.

He claimed that a feasibility report for the development of State Highway 67 has been submitted to the government.

Mangaluru/ Udupi, June 19: As many as 13 fresh coronavirus positive cases were reported in Dakshina Kannada on June 19, taking the total number of cases in the coastal district to 414. In Udupi, the total number of covid cases mounted to 1,050 with 11 new cases.

Four among the 13 patients in Dakshina Kannada had returned from Saudi Arabia and seven had returned from Sharjah recently. Two others were suffering from an influenza-like illness (ILI). All the 13 patients have been shifted to the designated COVID hospital in Mangaluru.

In Udupi, three among the 11 new covid patients are children. Four are Maharashtra returnees and two had come from Tamil Nadu. Five others have contracted infection from other positive patients. 

Only 98 cases are currently active in Udupi among 1,050. As many as 950 patients have been discharged from hospital. Two deaths have occurred in the district including one on Friday.
