Mangaluru, Jan 31: Officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Regional Unit, Mangaluru, seized 1,282 grams of gold valued at about Rs. 39 lakh from a Kerala native at Mangaluru International Airport and arrested him on Tuesday.
The passenger, identified as Ahamed Nabeel Gaffoor, aged 21 years and from Kasaragod, arrived at the airport from Dubai at 6 p.m.
Vinayak Bhat, Deputy Director, DRI, Mangaluru, said in a release on Wednesday that Gaffoor had concealed 11 gold tola bars of foreign origin inside his mobile phone pouch.
On opening the pouch it was found that seven tola bars of gold of foreign origin (intact) and four tola bars of gold of foreign origin, cut into eight pieces, were cleverly concealed inside by using black/silver adhesive tapes to avoid detection.
They were found to be of 24 carat purity gold, he said.
“It was revealed that he was carrying a mobile like item in his front trouser pocket. It was also observed that the so called mobile was heavier than usual and it was sealed from all the sides,” the release added.
