Gold worth Rs 64 lakh seized at Mangaluru Airport from six Dubai passengers

Mangaluru, Nov 30: The officials of Customs at Mangaluru International Airport have seized gold valued over about Rs 64 lakh in six cases of smuggling during November. The smugglers had used diverse modus operandi to bring in the contraband.

In a case involving seizure of 803 grams of gold, gold powder was mixed with a chemical to form a gum and filled into hollows of sandals worn by him.

In another case, a passenger had hidden 4 gold biscuits weighing 466.4 grams under arc of his feet, which were covered with foot bands and socks worn over it.

Another passenger intercepted was found to be in possession of 3 cut pieces of gold biscuit weighing 184.29 grams in the inner pocket of his trousers.

In another case detected, a passenger had concealed 4 gold biscuits weighing 466.5 grams in his rectum. In yet other two cases, two passengers had worn gold khadas, weighing 221 gms, which were coated with Rhodium to make it appear like steel.

M Subramaniyam, commissioner, Customs said customs officials have thwarted ingenious and varied modus operandi adopted by the passengers, while attempting to smuggle gold through MIA.

Total gold seized during the month is 2.141 kgs valued at Rs 64.38 lakh. Among the six passengers intercepted for smuggling, 3 were from Kasaragod, 2 from Bhatkal and one from Dakshina Kannada. All had arrived from Dubai.

One passenger was arrested and investigation is in progress in all the cases, Subramaniyam noted.

Bengaluru, Jan 16: Members and activists of social organisation Rakshana Vedike on Thursday staged a protest and demanded the arrest of BJP MLA Somashekhara Reddy, for his 'provocative' remarks and statements.

The protesters gathered near Gandhi’s statue near Maurya circle in the city and demanded that the BJP MLA should be arrested immediately.

The protesters alleged that Reddy’s remark were aimed at inciting communal hatred and that his remarks do not do justice to his being an elected representative of the people in the state assembly.

Kalaburagi, Mar 16: In the wake of coronavirus scare, the public gatherings including local markets, village fairs, Urs festival in Kalaburagi district have been banned, said B Sharat, Deputy Commissioner, on Sunday.

"Gatherings including local markets, village fairs, Urs festival in the district have been banned as a precautionary measure against the coronavirus until further orders," Sharat said.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that Europe has become the new 'epicenter' of the global coronavirus pandemic that has infected more than 15 lakh people with over 4,000 deaths globally.

Bengaluru, Mar 27: A software engineer has been arrested for giving a "call" to the people to sneeze in the open and spread coronavirus, police said on Friday.
The person identified as Mujeeb Mohammad had made this call in a Facebook post.
"Let's join hands, go out and sneeze with open mouth in public. Spread the virus," he wrote.

"The person who put this post saying people should go out and sneeze and spread the virus has been detained. His name is Mujeeb. He works in a software company," Bengaluru Joint Commissioner of Police Sandeep Patil said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Infosys tweeted: "We are deeply concerned with an inappropriate post being attributed to an Infosys employee. We strongly reaffirm our commitment to responsible social-sharing.

The company also said, "Our preliminary enquiry, and discussions with our employees suggest that this could be a case of a mistaken identity."
"However, given the seriousness with which we take such matters, we are investigating this further and will also assist with any independent investigation. The company would take appropriate action based on its investigation," it added
