'Goonda sarkar' shielding MLA's son, says Jagadish Shettar

Bengaluru, Feb 21: The state government on Tuesday came under attack from the Opposition BJP in both Houses of the legislature over two public brawls involving Congress functionaries.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Jagadish Shettar, who sought to move an adjournment motion in this regard, described the state government as "a goonda sarkar" and accused it of trying to protect Congress legislator N A Haris's son, Mohammed Haris Nalapad, who brutally beat a youth at a city pub last Saturday.

The second incident involved a Congress worker, Narayanaswamy, who reportedly threatened to set a BBMP office afire in KR Puram.

Irrelevant cases

"Police initially registered cases under irrelevant and insignificant IPC Sections against Haris Nalapad. Section 307 (attempted murder) was invoked only after pressure mounted," he suggested.

Ministers K J George, R Roshan Baig and U T Khader tried to defend the government, leading to a commotion in the House.

Shettar claimed the police were not given a free hand to deal with such cases. Haris Nalapad was involved in violent brawls in the past, too, but the cases were hushed up, he added.

"The home minister (Ramalinga Reddy) recently said those taking the law into their hands will be booked under the Goonda Act. Why hasn't he included Haris Nalapad on the goonda list," the former chief minister asked. He claimed that Muniraju, another Congress worker from KR Puram, had assaulted a BJP worker on Monday.

In the Legislative Council, the Opposition demanded that Mohammed Nalapad be booked under the Goonda Act. The Leader of the Opposition in the Council, K S Eshwarappa, alleged police inaction "owing to external pressure".

'Action as per the law'

Replying to the charges, both Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the home minister said action had been taken against Haris Nalapad as per the law. "The law will take its own course. The government will not interfere in such cases. Make it an issue is not right," Siddaramaiah said.

Bengaluru, Jul 22: On Wednesday morning starlet and Bigg Boss 3 contestant Jayashree Ramaiah sent social media into a tizzy with an update that read, “I quit. Goodbye to this f*****g world and depression.” Friends and acquaintances immediately began reaching out to the actor asking her to return their concerned calls and desist from taking any extreme steps.

“Jayashree has been battling depression for a while now. She had family issues and was also concerned about the lack of work,” shares actor Ashvithi Shetty. The Ramachari twins were in touch with Jayashree since they met at a celebrity cricket match four years ago. “She has shared several times about how low she’s been and I would try to cheer her up. But the problem was that she’d keep changing her phone number so often that it became difficult to keep track of how she was doing,” states Ashvithi.

Around four months ago, Jayashree moved into her own home and mentioned to her that she was happy with this new development in her life. “But she went retreated again and a few days ago, I messaged her on social media and she said she was doing fine. So I was shocked to see this update on Wednesday morning,” avers the actor. Repeated calls finally elicited a message from Jayashree that she was getting admitted to the hospital. “But I also got contradictory information that she had been discharged and had been taken to the hospital again but she was refusing to go inside. I am awaiting more clarity on the issue,” sums up Ashvithi.

Hassan, Feb 9: Accusing the Centre for treating Karnataka as its enemy Former Minister and Congress leader UT Khader on Saturday said that the state did not get support from the Centre on the Mahadayi issue and flood relief and even the Union Budget.

Speaking to the media here, he said that the state has elected 25 BJP Lok Sabha members. Three from the state were Ministers in the Union Cabinet and another MP has been appointed president of the party’s state unit.

'None of them have spoken about the injustice done to the state in the budget. The budget document announced Rs 18,600 crore for the suburban railway in Bengaluru. But, ultimately the amount earmarked for the project is only Rs 1 crore. How can any BJP leader justify this?', the Congress leader wondered.

Bengaluru, Mar 5: Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Wednesday admitted in the legislative assembly that corruption was deep-rooted in government offices and held transfer racket as the root cause of the graft menace.

“Unless we root it out from the system, we can never uphold the spirit of the Constitution and ensure equitable justice to people. If legislators lend support (to this cause), then we can weed out this menace,” Yediyurappa said during a special discussion on the Constitution.

Successive governments have been accused by opposition parties of running a transfer racket, but there’s very little done to institute a probe or order a crackdown following the allegations.

The chief minister’s candid admission came after senior Congress MLA HK Patil, quoting a report from Amnesty International, said 63% of people in Karnataka give bribe to get their work done in government offices. The CM said he agreed with the report in toto.
