Government trying to keep Lokayukta post vacant: Jagadish Shettar

Hubballi, Jan 20: Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Jagadish Shettar on Thursday charged that the government was purposely trying to keep the post of the Lokayukta vacant.

jagadishHe told mediapersons here that the government did not want to appoint anybody to the post.

As the post of Lokayukta is vacant for the past one year, many complaints have not been attended to. The chief minister is not in favour of disposing those complaints. Hence, he recommended the name of Justice Vishwanath Shetty against whom there are some charges.

The chief minister should again call a meeting of the committee concerned to discuss the appointment of Lokayukta, Shettar said. Issues like arrest of MLA?Raju Kage and Sangolli Rayanna Brigade would be discussed in the BJP core committee meeting to be held in Kalaburagi on Friday, he added.

Bengaluru, Jan 5: Rural development and panchayat raj minister K S Eshwarappa has received two threatening calls from Tamil Nadu, according to Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai.

He said that he had instructed the police to provide adequate security. 

At 12.30 pm on Friday, an unidentified person made a phone call. Speaking in Tamil, he threatened Eshwarappa with life, it is said.

Eshwarappa is known for abusive remarks and issuing threats to non-Hindus.

Bengaluru, Jul 7: Vasudeva Maiya, former CEO of Sri Guru Raghavendra Co-operative Bank, was found dead in his car in Bengaluru on July 6.

The Subramanyapura police have begun an investigation into Vasudeva Maiya's death.  Source said that he committed suicide. He was a native of Kota in Udupi district.

The car was found parked a little away from Maiya's house at around 6.30 pm on July 6.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had in January imposed restrictions on Sri Guru Raghavendra Co-operative Bank and limited withdrawals to Rs 35,000 by customers.

On June 18, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) raided five offices of Sri Guru Raghavendra Co-operative Bank, in relation to alleged misappropriation of Rs 1,400 crore.

The RBI, Enforcement Directorate, Criminal Investigation Department, and Registrar of Cooperative Societies are looking into the financial irregularities at the lender.

The police also conducted searches at residences of Maiya and the bank's chairman K Ramakrishna in relation to the above mentioned case, sources said.

Mangaluru, Jun 23: A charter flight carrying as many as 166 people including a child stranded in United Arab Emirates today reached Mangaluru. 

The flight was chartered by M Friends Charitable Trust, Mangaluru and My Community Foundation with the sole intention of helping the repatriation of stranded passengers such as pregnant women, elderly people and those who are in need of emergency medical care. 

The flydubia flight FZ4617 took off from Dubai at 2 p.m. and landed at Mangaluru International Airport at 7:22 p.m.

The passengers who arrived from UAE hail from different parts of coastal Karnataka and passengers themselves had borne the ticket fare for their travel.

M Friends president Haneef Haji Goltamajalu has thanked representatives of My Community Foundation and M Friends Trusty Ashraf Abbas Kunjattur, M Friends NRI leader Haneef Puttur, general secretary Rasheed Vittla for their efforts in chartering the flight.

In the last three weeks, 13 special flights with around 2150 passengers from various Gulf countries had landed at Mangaluru airport. 

Already, throat swab samples of 1814 passengers, who had arrived in Mangaluru, have been tested and 239 people with international travel history have tested positive and the samples of 1,575 passengers have tested negative so far.
