Chennai, Dec 10: The State government has allotted Rs. 15 crore for the construction of a memorial for former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa near the MGR memorial on the Marina.

jayalalithamemoryAccording to a minister, the tender for executing the work will be floated soon.

“The money has been allotted and officials have taken the measurements around where Amma was laid to rest. A tender will be floated, and after the minimum required period, work on her memorial will be undertaken at full speed,” the Minister told The Hindu on Friday.

Jayalalithaa was laid to rest within the confines of the MGR memorial, which is spread over eight acres.

Officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) said the department was yet to come up with a design for the memorial. “We are yet to receive a directive from the government in this regard,” an official said.

“We are only carrying out minor repair work on the site. Temporary arrangements like provision of tent and barricades around the site have been made. The construction of the memorial is still in the preliminary planning stage,” an official said.

Even as thousands of people thronged the Marina to pay homage to Jayalalithaa all through the day, the late Chief Minister's confidante V.K. Sasikala visited the burial site and spent some time there. Teary-eyed, she went around the place where Jayalalithaa was buried.

Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam and his senior Cabinet colleagues — P. Thangamani, Edapaddi Palaniswami, Dindigul Srinivasan and S.P. Velumani — were waiting at the barricades when Ms. Sasikala, her sister-in-law Ilavarasi, a few family members and domestic aides at Veda Nilayam, the former Chief Minister's Poes Garden residence, paid their respects.

Later, Mr. Panneerselvam and the ministers too paid their respects. A couple of Ministers tonsured their heads.

Vijayapura, June 16: Even as a video of a man wearing a burqa who is being thrashed by locals is going viral on social media, netizens targeted Bharatiya Janata Party for their activist resorting to heinous acts.

The man who was caught in burqa has been identified as Siddu Paragond, an activist of Snagh Parivar hailing from Sindgi town in Karnataka’s Vijayapura district.

The bizarre incident took place in Sindgi on June 11 outside a bank.

“While people including women were standing in a queue outside the bank, the person in burqa was acting in a suspicious manner. The person was trying to get too close to women which was making them feel awkward,” local residents said.

“Getting suspicious, some locals tried to interact and their suspicion rose with the strange behaviour of the person. Suddenly some men took the person away from the bank and checked only to find that it was a man in burqa. The men thrashed him and handed him over to police,” the sources said.

Confirming this, Superintendent of Police Anupam Agrawal said that the Siddu Paragond has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. He, however, made it clear that no suspicious objects were found on Siddu. “We are trying to find out the motive for his act,” the SP said.

Kochi, Mar 1:Adheringto a policy of "zero tolerance" towards clergy who sexually exploit minors, Pope Francis has expelled a Kerala priestconvicted of rape from all priestly duties and rights, according to church officials.

Syro-Malabar Church priest Robin Vadakkumchery is currently serving a jail term for impregnating a 16-year-old girl in Mananthavady diocese.

"Vadakkumchery has been dispensed from the exercise of priestly duties and rights. That means he has been reduced to the state of a layman", a Church official told PTI.

He was suspended from priestly duties soon after the news about his crime was reported in early 2017.

A POCSO court in Thalassery last year had sentenced Vadakkumchery to 20 years of Rigorous Imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs three lakh on him.

The priest, 50, was the vicar of the local church in Kottiyur in Kannur district and manager at the school where the victim was studying.

He was arrested two years ago while trying to flee to Canada.

The Vatican's action came two years after Pope Francis made it clear that all bishops should adhere to a policy of "zero tolerance" for clergy who sexually exploit children.
