Govt hasn’t taken any decision on handing over Mangaluru Airport to Adani, claims union minister

Mangaluru, Apr 16: In a bizarre claim, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Suresh Prabhu has said that the government has yet taken no decision on privatising Mangaluru International Airport.

He was responding to queries of media persons at a press conference in in the city. “There is no decision taken on that subject,” he said.

However, recent reports had suggested that model code of conduct imposed after the announcement of the Lok Sabha polls had put on hold the handing over of the six airports including Mangaluru to Adani.

Reports also suggested that the decision to defer handing over the six airports, at present run by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), to Adani may have been prompted by the government’s intent to avoid a political controversy before the general elections. Such large contracts had become a subject of political controversies in the past.

“There is no need to award the projects in a hurry. It can be done in due course," a government official cited earlier.

Deferring the award of the projects till the election is over will reduce the chance of controversy, considering that all the six projects were won by a bidder who has little experience in managing airports. An email sent to the company seeking comments about the award of the projects remained unanswered till publishing of this story.

Flight chartered by KSCC brings 173 stranded Kannadigas from Sharjah to Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jun 21: The first flight chartered by Karnataka Sports and Cultural Club (KSCC) to repatriate stranded UAE Kannadigas today reached Mangaluru from Sharjah.

The Air Arabia flight with 173 passengers took off from Sharjah international airport around 6:00 am (UAE Time) and landed at Mangaluru International Airport at around 11.00 am (IST) on Sunday.

The flight had 29 pregnant women, 16 children, 5 infants, senior citizens, people with medical emergencies and those who have lost jobs among others.

KSCC Manager Mr Shafi said that all the legal procedures were carried out smoothly. Charter flight was arranged only for the stranded Kannadigas.

KSCC had set up help desk to finalize list of passengers, given discounted ticket fare for needy passengers who cannot afford the full repatriation cost. Free PPE kits were distributed to all passengers along with snacks.

Meanwhile rapid tests for Covid-19 was conducted before departure and mandatory quarantine for all the passengers was arranged accordingly in 3 hotels in Mangaluru for a period of seven days.

KSCC office bearers Shafi, Althaf, Javed, Naseer and volunteers were present at airport during the flight departure. KSCC has expressed gratitude to Consulate General, DC of DK District, Umar U H and Ataullah Jokkate for their support.

Karnataka cops arrest 4 peddlers from Kerala, seize drugs worth Rs 1.25 cr

Bengaluru, July 29: The Central Crime Branch arrested four international drug peddlers belonging to Kerala and recovered drugs worth Rs 1.25 crore from them, said Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday.

"We have started a war on drugs. Our agenda is to curb the drug mafia not only in Bengaluru, but in entire Karnataka. Many people are involved in the drug mafia. They are targeting students, other states, and international students who can spend and afford to become victims," said Bommai.

The recovered items include 2,000 kg LSD strips, 110 grams MDMA Cristol, 10 ecstasy tablets, 5 kg Ganja, five cell phones, weighing machine and pouches.

"When we raided a house in Soladevanahally police station area, we arrested Shahad Mohammed, Azmal, Ajin KG Verghese and Nitin Mohan. All are from Kerala and we will arrest their contacts as well. They are involved in the dark web mafia," Bommai said.

He said the peddlers were using post offices and couriers for their business.

"I'll speak to the central government, the home ministry and postal department, and other issues related to this mafia. Canada, Netherlands, and other nations are also involved in this mafia," said the state home minister.

"People from influential backgrounds are also involved in this mafia, but our objective is zero tolerance. We are using our intelligence. Drugs are coming from other states like AP, Goa, and other states," he said.
Bommai said he was personally addressing this case and appealed for support from parents, schools and colleges.

"I'm addressing this issue personally because it's important to curb the drug mafia. I need support from schools and college managements and parents. I'll also call college and hostel managements before colleges start. We will make managements responsible," he said.

59 new COVID-19 cases in Karnataka; state tally reaches 848

Bengaluru, May 10: Karnataka on Sunday reported 59 new cases of coronavirus, taking the total number of cases in the state to 848, informed state health department.
Out of the total number of cases, 422 people have been discharged and 31 have died due to the infection in the state.
The health department further informed that six COVID-19 patients are currently in the Intensive Care Unit.
