Govt ignoring senior citizens; I won’t accept Rajyotsava Award: Shanbhag

Udupi, Oct 31: Dr Ravindranath Shanbhag, president of the Human Rights Protection Foundation (HRPF), who has been chosen for this year’s Karnataka Rajyotsava award, has decided not to accept the award.

The state government on Monday released a list of 62 achievers from various fields to be conferred the prestigious award on November 1. The award carries Rs 1 lakh cash, 20 gms gold medal and a citation. Shanbhag’s name appeared in social work category.

However, Shanbhag said that he would refuse the award as a mark of protest against the “lackadaisical implementation” of the Maintenance and Protection of Senior Citizens Act in the State.

He said that many senior citizens have approached him and the HRPF seeking help in their cases, most of which are related to property dispute. The sad state of affairs can be gauged from the fact that of the 23 senior citizens who approached the HRPF for help, eight have passed away while waiting for the implementation of tribunal orders passed in their favour. “I have approached the Ministers and bureaucrats, but nothing is happening on this front,” Dr Shanbhag lamented.

He said the administrative machinery was passive to cases falling under the Act. “This has disheartened me. Besides, I learnt the fact that I have been chosen for the Rajyotsava Award from the media. I have still not received any official invitation for receiving the award. When they officially invite me, I will ask them about the lack of action on the Maintenance and Protection of Senior Citizens Act,” he said.

Mangaluru, Mar 24: Seven people were arrested on Tuesday for violating prohibitory orders imposed under Section 144 of CrPC in Mangaluru during the lockdown in Karnataka, Commissioner of Police PS Harsha said.

Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday had announced a complete lockdown in the state till April 1.
"In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the entire state will be locked down from 12 am of March 23 to April 1. People are requested to strictly follow it to contain the coronavirus spread," he said.
Earlier, the state government had ordered the suspending of all public and private transport services.
According to the data compiled by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the total number of the infection-related death toll in the country rose to nine on Tuesday, while the total number of active cases reached 482.

Mangaluru, Jan 23: Members of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) on Thursday held a protest against the Karnataka government, accusing it of shielding Aditya Rao, the main accused of planting an improvised explosive device (IED) at the Mangaluru airport on January 20.

Meanwhile, the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Court has sent the accused Aditya Rao to 10 days police custody.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Bengaluru Police said that the procedure is being followed to hand-over to the Mangaluru Police a suspect who surrendered before it two days after planting an improvised explosive device (IED) at the Mangaluru International Airport.

The IED was later defused in an open field by the personnel of the bomb disposal squad.

Bengaluru, Jul 2: Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said that the "RSS needs to be defeated to save the country" and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are "destroying the nation".

Kharge was speaking at a KPCC program where DK Shivakumar took charge as state Congress president.

He said that the Prime Minister and the Home Minister are not ready to take accountability for any issues including China, and are instead blaming Rajiv Gandhi Foundation of getting funds from China.

"Rajiv Gandhi foundation utilized funds for the development of the nation and for the betterment of the downtrodden people," Kharge said.

"Prime Minister Modi and Shah both are destroying the economy of the nation, and their policies and plans are the reason for increasing COVID-19 situation in India," he said.

"Prime Minister and Amit Shah never listen to Opposition parties, instead they plan something and their policies are the reason for MSME losses and job losses in the country," he added.
