Lucknow, May 31: About 2,000 Dalit cops whose promotion — granted during BSP's rule—was cancelled by the current Samajwadi Party government would be reinstated a move that will have political implications ahead of the 2017 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
During her tenure as UP CM, Mayawati had introduced a 'quota in promotion' scheme which was struck down by the Allahabad HC in 2011 but the Supreme Court upheld it in 2012. The state's home department has written to the UP DGP that some Dalit police officers, wrongly demoted along with quota-inpromotion beneficiaries be reinstated.
The department looks at putting these 2,000 cops in that category to send a strong political signal ahead of the elections without violating court orders.
