Govt should check anti-nationals in universities: RSS

March 11, 2016

Nagpur, Mar 11: The RSS on Friday condemned the raising of anti-national slogans in JNU, saying “subversive” elements have made universities the centre of their activities for long and should be checked by governments, as its top brass on Friday began a three-day brainstorming session in Nagpur.

Referring to Malda episode, the Sangh fountainhead also voiced concern over instances of violence and decried attempts to create “atmosphere of fear” as it asked political parties to give up their “policy of appeasement” and take such incidents seriously.

“We expect the central and state governments to deal strictly with such anti-national and antisocial forces and ensure the sanctity and cultural atmosphere by not allowing our educational institutions to become centres of political activities,” RSS said in its annual report presented at the meeting of Akhil Bhartiya Pratinidhi Sabha, the top decision making body, that began in Nagpur on Friday amid tight security.

The RSS has said the meeting will focus on issues like education system, eradicating caste-based discrimination and social harmony, while deciding on steps like changing the uniform of its members “to keep up with the times”.

The meet of BJP's idealogical mentor assumes importance in the backdrop of Narendra Modi government facing flak over handling of JNU row, dalit student's suicide in Hyderabad, allegations of saffronisation of education and the debate over intolerance ahead of crucial assembly elections.

Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh Chief Mohan Bhagwat offered floral tributes at the portrait of Bharat Mata' in the presence of BJP President Amit Shah at the start of the three-day meet.

“Reports about anti-national activities in certain universities have become a matter of concern for the patriotic people. In the name of freedom of expression, how can the slogans calling for breaking up and destruction of the nation be tolerated and how can the guilty, who had hatched the conspiracy to blow up Parliament, be honoured as martyr?” the RSS report presented by Sar-Karywah Suresh Joshi said.

The RSS said that those who do such things have no faith in the Constitution, judiciary and Parliament and “such subversive elements have made these universities the centres of their activities for long”.

“When they find certain political parties supporting such anti-national elements, the concern (of patriotic persons) grows further,” the report said.

“Incidents of violence and terror attacks have become a matter of grave concern. Under the pretext of small and big issues, people armed with weapon take to the roads creating atmosphere of fear, as has happened in Malda, and it has become endemic nowadays. Destruction of public and private properties, looting and burning business establishment specially those run by Hinuds, has taken place. Political parties, giving up their policy of appeasement, should take such incidents seriously and cooperate to restore the law and order situation and peace,” the RSS said.

The saffron outfit said it will be possible only when parties “shed their petty and parochial political interests”.

“Political parties should make a combined effort in the right direction. No political party or person is more important than national security. “It is the responsibility of an efficient and strong government to instill confidence in the people about their security,” the report said.

Krishna Gopal, Sah-Sar Karyawah of the RSS, said issues of education, medical and health, and social harmony were on top of the agenda, but reservations and construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya could be discussed if they are raised at the meeting.

“We have three main issues on the agenda — education, medical and health, and social harmony. Beyond that, only if any such issue comes, we may look into that,” he told reporters when asked whether issues of Ram Temple and reservations will also be discussed.

“Reservation has its own place. Constitution has given its nod. It is sanvidhan-sammat' and the country has accepted it.

“If anything comes, we would discuss,” he said. He evaded questions on Ram temple construction and only said, “We will look into it if such a thing comes.”

He said the body will issue a resolution on the issue of social harmony. “Caste based discrimination exist in the country and it should be ended,” he said.

On the issue of change in uniform, he said that there were several proposals and will be discussed in the meeting.

“Discussions are on. Any decision will be taken as per the requirement of the present time,” he said.

The RSS is likely to replace khaki knickers with trousers and the colour may also see a change. Gopal said that improving the accessibility and affordability of quality education, medical and health facilities and abolishment of untouchability and improving social harmony are the key issues.

“Education should be of good quality and every common man should have access to quality education,” Gopal said.

Similarly, good medical and health facilities should be available to all.

“Health facilities are getting costlier and the common man is suffering. What should be done to provide relief to people will be discussed in the meeting.

“In the annual meeting, representatives discuss progress, new initiatives and other related issues,” he said. Close to 1,300 members are expected to participate in the meeting being held nearly 230 km from state capital Jaipur.

Dear danish,

Can you give us one instance where RSS worked for country? Every one knows how they are struggling to divide the communities. Who killed Mahatma Gandhi? Who killed Indira and Rajeev? Who is responsible for Malegao and mecca masjid blasts? Is this prepared for unity? Talking for unity, until now you people are not ready eat and drink with Dalits. You never give food to them in your house. Do you eat the food with Dalit? Until we can not abolish mentality, we can not expect improvement.

Many RSS people were arrested by Anti-Terrorist groups for Bomb Blast case. Incident shows that RSS is an anti-national group, and they have no rights to speak about national.

Bengaluru, Jan 17: Chief minister BS Yediyurappa is likely to induct new ministers into his cabinet only after he returns from Davos, Switzerland, on January 25.

Yediyurappa will leave for Davos on January 19 to participate in the World Economic Forum’s 50th annual meet.

Sources say Yediyurappa is keen on expanding his cabinet before he leaves for Davos and is still trying to secure the green signal from BJP national president Amit Shah. However, Shah has cold-shouldered Yediyurappa’s several requests for a meeting to discuss the issue.

Shah is scheduled to visit Karnataka on January 18 to participate in a pro-Citizenship (Amendment) Act rally in Hubballi and the CM plans to corner him there. But, given the time constraint, Yediyurappa is likely to put off the exercise till he returns from Davos even if Shah extends approval.

“Even if Shah gives the green signal, Yediyurappa will have less than 24 hours to expand his cabinet,” a source said. “It is highly unlikely he will rush through the process of inducting ministers. Also, his presence is required to douse disgruntlement which is bound to arise once the new ministers are sworn in.”

The CM and the party high command are on different pages as far as cabinet expansion is concerned. While Yediyurappa is hell-bent on keeping his promise of inducting all the newly elected MLAs, who switched from Congress and JD(S) to the BJP, Shah is keen on sharing vacant berths equally between loyal MLAs and the new entrants. There are 16 cabinet berths vacant.

Shah, sources said, is of the opinion that giving 12 berths to the turncoats will lead to heartburn among loyalists and it will impact the party’s prospects in the next election. “Moreover, he is of the opinion that none of the turncoats have mass appeal, nor do they have any administrative experience. This, he thinks, will impact governance,” said a source.

This has resulted in a deadlock and the issue has dragged on for a month now.

Like most of the political phenomenon, even the practice of Nationalism is not a static one. It changes with the changing political equations of the political forces and assumes the expressions which are very diverse. As such the phenomenon of Nationalism has a long journey and various state policies in particular have used it for purposes which relate more to the power of the state ‘vis a vis’ its people, power of the state ‘vis a vis’ the neighboring countries among others.

In India there has been a certain change in the practices of the state which have transformed the meaning of Nationalism during last few years. Particularly with BJP, the Hindu Nationalist outfit gaining simple majority, it has unfolded the policies where one can discern the drastic change in the meaning and application of Nationalism in regard to its citizens, particularly those belonging to minority community, with regard to those who are liberal, and with those who stand with the concept of Human rights.

Our former Prime Minister of Dr. Manmohan Singh hit the nail on the head when he said that “Nationalism and the "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" slogan are being misused to construct a "militant and purely emotional" idea of India that excludes millions of residents and citizens. Former Prime Minister recently stated this in an apparent attack on the BJP.” The occasion was the release of a book, ‘Who is Bharat Mata’, edited by Purushottam Agarwal and Radhakrishna. This is a compilation of significant extracts from writings of Nehru, and important assessments of and contributions of Nehru by prominent personalities.

Dr. Singh went on to add "With an inimitable style…Nehru laid the foundation of the universities, academies and cultural institutions of Modern India. But for Nehru's leadership, independent India would not have become what it is today," This statement of Dr. Singh has great importance in contemporary times, as Nehru is being denigrated by Hindu nationalists for all the problems which India is facing today and attempts are on to undermine his role and glorifying Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel. This is also significant as it gives us the glimpses of what Nationalism meant for Nehru.

As Singh’s statement captures the present nationalism being practiced by BJP and company, the Hindu nationalists, immediately shot back saying that Dr. Singh is supporting the anti India activities at JNU and Jamia and his party is supporting the anti India nationalists. They asked whether Singh likes the nationalism of the likes of Shashi Tharoor or Manishankar Ayer who are provoking the Shaheen Bagh protest rather than making the protestors quiet. Whether he likes the anti national protests which go on at JNU or Jamia? As per them there is no Nationalism in Congress. One more example being cited is the private visit of Shatrughan Sinha who talked to Pakistani President during his visit there recently!

Most of the arguments being used to oppose Dr. Singh are very superficial. What is being referred to; is not opposition to Indian nationalism and its central values which were the core of anti colonial struggles. While ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ may not be acceptable to a section of population, even the book he was releasing has the title ‘Who is Bharat Mata’. What is being stated by Singh is the twist which slogan ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ has been used by Hindu nationalists to frighten the religious minorities.

Indian nation came into being on the values, which later were the foundation of Indian Constitution. Indian Constitution carefully picked up the terminology which was away from the concepts of Hindu or Muslim nationalism. That’s how the country came to be called as ‘India that is Bharat’. The freedom of expression which was the hallmark of freedom movement and it was given a pride of place in our Constitution. It respected the diversity and formulated rules where the nation was not based on particular culture, as Hindu nationalists will like us to believe, but cultural diversity was centrally recognized in the Constitution. In addition promoting good relations with neighbors and other countries of the World was also part of our principles.

JNU, Jamia and AMU are being demonized as most institutions so far regard the freedom of expression as a core part of Indian democracy. These institutions have been thriving on discussions and debates which have base in liberalism. Deliberately some slogans have been constructed to defame these institutions. While Constitution mandates good relations with neighbors, creation of ‘Anti Pakistan hysteria’ is the prime motive of many a channels and sections of other media, which are servile to the ideology of ruling Government. They also violate most of the norms of ethical journalism, where the criticism of the ruling party is an important factor to keep the ruling dispensation in toes.

A stifling atmosphere has been created during last six years. In this the Prime Minster can take a detour, land in Pakistan to have a cup of tea with Pakistan PM, but a Congress leader talking to Pakistani President is a sign of being anti National. Students taking out a march while reading the preamble of Indian Constitution are labeled as anti-national; and are stopped while those openly wielding guns near Jamia or Shaheen Bagh roam freely.

Nationalism should promote amity and love of the people; it should pave the way for growth and development. Currently the nationalism which is dominant and stalking the streets has weakened the very fraternity, which is one of the pillars of our democracy. Nehru did explain that Bharat Mata is not just our mountains, rivers and land but primarily the people who inhabit the land. Which nationalism to follow was settled during the freedom movement when Muslim nationalism and Hindu nationalism were rejected by the majority of people of India in favor of the Nationalism of Gandhi, Nehru, Patel and Maulana Azad, where minorities are equal citizens, deserving affirmative action. In today’s scenario the Hindu nationalists cannot accept any criticism of their policies.
