Govt should set up panel to study provision for Lingayat religion: Shettar

Bengaluru, Aug 3: The Karnataka government should appoint a committee of experts to study whether the Constitution has a provision to declare a community as an independent religion, opined former chief minister and senior BJP leader Jagadish Shettar.

Shettar, who is the leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, told reporters here that discussions in favour of and against a separate religion status for the Lingayat community are being held. But, it should be first decided whether there is a scope for this in the Constitution.

There should be clarity on whether state and Union governments have the power to declare any community as an independent religion.

The present demand being raised in this regard is ‘temporary political tactics’ and through this, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is trying to divide society. Veerashaiva and Lingayat seers should not blame each other, but together hold discussions and come to a consensus on the issue, Shettar opined.

'Ready for change in Portfolio,' says Forest Minister Anand Singh

Bengaluru, Feb 15: The new Karnataka Minister for Forest Anand Singh on Friday said that he is ready for 'change in the portfolio' as opposition parties are leveling charges against Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa for appointing him, despite having 15 cases registered under Forest Act against him.

"If Chief Minister wants to change my portfolio, I am ready," he added.

Speaking to newsmen here, he said that there are 15 cases pending against him. The Legislator from Vijayanagara in Mine rich Ballari district said anyone can go through the Chargesheets and find out whether there are any direct charges against him. Claiming that the cases against him were 'minor violations', he had earlier linked them to traffic violations by a vehicle owner.

12 from Karnataka, who attended Tablighi Jamaat conference, test negative for COVID-19

Bengaluru, Apr 1: As many as 12 of the 40 identified people from Karnataka, who attended Tablighi congregation in Nizamuddin, Delhi, have tested negative for COVID-19, state Health Minister B Sriramulu said in a tweet on Wednesday.

It is also learnt that 62 foreigners from Indonesia and Malaysia, who attended the congregation, have visited the State and 12 of them have been quarantined, the tweet said.

''The health department, in association with the Home department, has jointly started the process of identifying all the 300 who attended the event,'' he said.

Women’s satyagrah, human chain mark Martyrs’ Day in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jan 30: A day-long ‘satyagrah’ by women followed by formation of human chain marked the Martyrs’ Day, the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, in Mangaluru.

The organisers were ‘We, the People of India’, whose sole intention was to safeguard constitution of India and raise voice against those to attack the constitution.

Amidst nationwide agitation by ‘We, the People of India’ against contentious CAA, NRC, the women of Manglauru have decided to hold satyagrah and form a human chain in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner in the heart of the city on January 30.

The Satyagrah commenced at 10 a.m. At 4:30 p.m. a human chain will be formed. At 5.17p.m. when the father of the nation was gunned down 72 years ago during his evening prayer at Birla House by Godse, the demonstrators raised the slogan of unity to defeat the ideology of Godse.
