Govt spending Rs 253 cr to fill lakes across Karnataka

Bengaluru, Jun 18: Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, on Tuesday, addressed the issue of water crisis in the state and said that the state government is making efforts to fill up lakes across the state and has ploughed in over Rs 250 crores for the same.

"We are trying to fill all the lakes and tanks as soon as possible. We are spending Rs 253 crores to fill the lakes. It really helps to fill the tanks after filling lakes because groundwater level will automatically rise. It is bad luck of our state that we are unable to use reservoir water of dams built in our state," he said.

"We have to leave so much of water to Tamil Nadu because the authority says that. That's why we are here trying all possibilities to fill all the lakes as soon as possible," he added.

Kumaraswamy also met the family members of farmer Suresh who allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in Mandya.

He said that private loan providers are responsible for creating this vicious web of loans and stressed on the need to regulate them.

"I have already told waiving of loans is not the permanent solution. We are trying to control private loan providers. Kerala has brought a new order to control the private loan providers. I have also decided to bring a bill and discuss in the upcoming legislative session on the subject of loans by private firms," he said.

Brahmavar, Jul 3: Two friends drowned accidentally in a rivulet while catching fish near Barkur in Brahmavar taluk of Udupi district today.  

The deceased have been identified as Karthik (20), a final year B.Com student, and Harsha (26), who was working as a recovery agent for a local finance company. Both were local residents. 

The incident took place around 8 a.m. when they were trying to catch fish. Even though a few locals were there on the spot they could not save the duo as the water level has increased in the rivulet due to rains. After an hour the bodies were fished out. 

A case was registered at Brahmavar police station and investigations are on.

Bengaluru, June 10: The Department of Primary and Secondary Education of Government of Karnataka today ordered a ban on online classes for children from KG to class 5.

The decision was taken following a report based on the report submitted by director NIMHANS, recommending online classes only above the age of 6 years and also following the complaints from several parents about online classes conducted by private schools even for kindergarten kids.

Briefing the media soon after the meeting with department officials, S Suresh Kumar, primary and secondary education minister said, "We have taken two major decisions today. The online classes for LKG, UKG and primary classes should be stopped immediately."

Even collecting fees in the name of online classes should be stopped, said the minister. "We have already issued a circular about it insisting that schools not collect fees in the name of online classes and also requesting schools not to increase fees for the 2020-21 academic year considering financial constraints of several people due to the COVID-19 pandemic," said the minister.

The department, however, also discussed how to engage children during this period as there was no clarity over the reopening of schools for the 2020-21 academic year. "We have constituted a committee to prepare guidelines on how to engage students and increase their knowledge. The committee is headed by Prof. MK Sridhar," he said.

Before taking this decision, the department had three rounds of discussions with various experts, including Prof. MK Sridhar, Prof. VP Niranjanaradhya, Dr John Vijay Sagar and other departments, including the home and health departments.

Tumkur, Feb 9: A special puja was performed at the Durga Parameshwari temple and the Shaneshwara temple in Karnataka's Rangana Halli village to save people from coronavirus.

Yashwanth Shastri, a priest, said: "We performed this special puja on Friday to save the world from virus and diseases like corona and H1N1."

"Our ancestors used to perform a special puja for the betterment of society and save the world from viruses when they attacked," he said.

Coronavirus originated in China's Wuhan city in December last year and has since spread to various cities around the world.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the coronavirus outbreak as a global health crisis.
