Mangaluru, Sept 24: Tanveer Sait, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education and Wakf has warned that the Karnataka government would not hesitate to take stringent action against those misusing wakf properties.

Addressing a meeting of Mutavallis from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi in the city on Saturday, he said the government has started the process of documenting wakf properties. Proceeds from these properties should be used for the welfare of the community. The government will not spare anybody fiddling with these properties, he said.

Mr. Sait said those misusing and encroaching upon Wakf properties will be booked under Section 52(a) of the Wakf (Amendment) Act, 2013.

He said action will be taken against organisations who have failed to return loan taken from the Wakf Council for building hospitals, schools and commercial complex.

Upalokayukta Report

Later speaking to media persons that minister said that the government is studying the interim report presented by the Upalokayukta on Wakf property in Karnataka. At the same time, steps have been taken to tighten laws pertaining to these properties and rules framed for its protection.

Sait said then chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda had directed Upalokayukta to study the report submitted by Anwar Manippady, then chairman of Karnataka State Minorities Commission and Upalokayukta has since then submitted an interim report. "While the government wanted to act on this interim report, and place it before both houses of legislature, the BJP wanted Anwar Manippady's full report to be tabled in the house," he said.

A PIL before the court too saw the court direct that Anwar's report be tabled in the house, he said, adding the government could not do so for the report per se was technically and legally not viable. "As per section 10 of Karnataka State Minorities Commission Act, the Commission is constituted by chairman and the members and one man cannot be the commission," Sait said adding he is fully aware that BJP will strive to score political brownie points in an election year.
