Gutkha pouches found under MLAs' seats in UP assembly

Lucknow, Jul 15: Uttar Pradesh government may have banned the consumption of betel and tobacco inside government offices and buildings in the state but the state lawmakers, it appears, themselves do not abide by the orders.gudka

'Gutkha' (Pan Masala) and 'khaini' (raw tobacco) pouches were found under the seats of the legislators in the state assembly during a search on Saturday.

According to the sources, the vacant gutkha and raw tobacco pouches were stuck up between the cushion and the seat. It clearly showed that the legislators had been consuming these items inside the assembly building and even while taking part in the proceedings.

The sleuths from the NIA and UP ATS on Saturday conducted a thorough search operation in the assembly in their effort to look for clues with regard to the discovery of PETN ( (Pentaerythritol tetranitrate), under the seat of an opposition party legislator on Wednesday.

Sources said that the explosive would be sent for -re-checking to the Forensic Science Laboratory at Hyderabad to ascertain not only its identity but also its intensity.

Police sources also said that the investigating agencies were likely to question some MLAs, including the one under whose seat the explosive was found.

The sleuths on Saturday questioned the sweepers and other staff members, who were deployed in the security of the house. The marshals were also quizzed, sources said.

Security was strengthened in the assembly building with additional security personnel deployed there. Bunkers were also set-up at different entry gates of the building.

A high-level meeting of the officials was also held here to discuss security threat to chief minister Yogi Adityanath in the wake of the discovery of the explosive.

Adityanath had said on Friday that the incident might have been part of a conspiracy and that the terror angle could not be ruled completely.

New Delhi, Jul 30: India's gold demand in 2020 is expected to fall to the lowest level in 26 years with domestic bullion prices hitting a record high and as falling disposable incomes could curtail retail purchases, the World Gold Council (WGC) said on Thursday.

Lower demand by the world's second-biggest bullion consumer could limit a rally in global prices, which hit a record high earlier this month, although it could also reduce India's trade deficit and support the ailing rupee.

"Fast rising gold prices could act as headwinds," said Somasundaram PR, the managing director of WGC's Indian operations.

Local gold futures have jumped 35% so far this year after rising a quarter in 2019.

India's gold consumption in the first half of 2020 plunged 56% on-year to 165.6 tonnes. Meanwhile, the coronavirus-triggered lockdown also slashed demand by 70% in the June quarter to 63.7 tonnes, the lowest in more than a decade, the WGC said in a report published on Thursday.

Millions of Indians have lost their jobs or taken a pay cut after the country imposed a lockdown on its 1.3 billion people to curb the spread of the virus that has infected more than 1.5 million Indians.

Consumption is generally high during the June quarter due to weddings and key festivals such as Akshaya Tritiya, but lockdown restrictions kept shoppers indoors this year.

The weak demand in the first half could drag down India's gold consumption in 2020 to the lowest since 1994, when demand stood at 415 tonnes, Somasundaram said, adding that it is still difficult to provide an estimate for full-year demand as the coronavirus crisis is still unfolding.

"Indian demand has previously jumped as much as 300 tonnes in a quarter. Latent demand could come out in the second half," Somasundaram said.

Pune, Jul 4: Now that wearing mask in public places has become the new normal, a resident of Pimpri-Chinchwad of Pune district, Shankar Kurade has got himself a mask made of gold worth Rs 2.89 lakhs amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"It's a thin mask with minute holes so that there is no difficulty in breathing. I am not sure whether this mask will be effective," said Kurade.

Kurade loves wearing gold ornaments and his hands and neck are loaded with jewellery.

This unique idea struck him soon after he saw a man wearing a silver mask on social media.

"I saw a video on social media of a man in Kolhapur wearing a silver mask and then an idea struck me to have a mask of gold. I talked to a goldsmith and he gave me this five and a half pound gold mask in a week," said Kurade.

"All my family members love gold, if they too demand it, then I will get it designed for them too. I do not know if I will be infected with coronavirus wearing a gold mask or not, but following all the rules of the government can prevent the spread of virus," he added.

Since childhood, Shankar is very fond of gold ornaments, that is the reason he wears gold rings in all the fingers, gold bracelets on his wrist and huge gold chains around his neck.

New Delhi, Feb 11: People of Delhi have explained the true meaning of nationalism through their mandate, AAP's prominent face Manish Sisodia said as he clinched victory on the Patparganj seat.

Sisodia, who retained his seat for the third time, said the BJP indulged in "politics of hate", but people refused to be divided.

"I am happy to have won the Patparganj seat again. The BJP indulged in politics of hate, but I thank the people of Patparganj. Today, Delhi's people have chosen a government which works for them and explained the true meaning of nationalism through their mandate," he told reporters.

Sisodia, who was the Deputy Chief Minister and led the government's education reforms agenda, defeated BJP's Ravinder Singh Negi by a margin of over 3,500 votes.

The initial trends saw a seesaw battle between Sisodia and Negi.

In 2013, Sisodia had won by a margin of 11,000 votes and in 2015 by over 28,000 votes.
