Hadiya case: Shafin Jahan moves contempt plea against NIA in SC

Shafin Jahan, the husband of Kerala’s Hindu converted Muslim girl Akhila alias Hadiya has once again approached the Supreme Court with a plea to initiate contempt proceedings against the National Investigation Agency for investigating the case without the supervision of a retired Supreme Court Judge.

Jahan, who is fighting for justice for Hadiya, earlier had approached the apex court against Kerala High Court’s controversial judgment nullifying his marriage with her.

The Supreme Court, in the month of August, had ordered NIA investigation in the case under the supervision of former Supreme Court Judge Justice RV Raveendran. But Justice Raveendran later declined the assignment citing personal reasons.

The Petition alleges that the NIA has begun its investigation and has submitted its reports despite the refusal of Justice R.V. Raveendran to head the probe. Mr. Jahan brings to the notice of the Court the fact that he has been summoned by the NIA and contends that this is in violation of the spirit of the Court’s order directing Justice Raveendran to head the probe.

He then demands “stringent action” against the Agency and contends, “Therefore, since Respondent No.6/Contemnor has already commenced investigation without there being any authorized person overseeing such investigation and has already gone ahead and filed a Status Report, the same goes against the spirit of this Honourable Courts order dated 16.8.2017 and is in clear violation and gross contempt of the same. That such an investigation is clearly not fair and proper and more so is contemptuous and is against the orders and directions of this Hon’ble Court. Moreover NIA seems to be in a hurry to come to a different conclusion than which has been arrived at by IO, Dy. SP of Crime Branch of Kerala Police.”

The Petition further alleges that the reports released by the National Commission for Women (NCW) assessing Hadiya’s current state is “uncalled for”. NCW’s visit to Hadiya’s house has also been termed as one “made with a vested interest and malafide intent to prejudice the present proceedings”.

Meanwhile the NIA team has recorded the statement of Hadiya earlier this week. During the last hearing the Supreme Court directed Hadiya’s father Ashokan to produce her before the Court on November 27.

Court procedures delay. It will take years to get justice. I think they can live together only when they get much more older/aged

Bengaluru, May 30: Health Minister B Sriramulu banned the consumption of chewing tobacco in public places on Saturday, which is marked as World Tobacco Day. The ban would include chewing paan masala and spitting in public places.

In June 2013, the state banned the manufacture, storage, sale, or distribution of gutka and paan masala containing tobacco or nicotine as ingredients to reduce the prevalence of tobacco use. On October 26, 2016, the state proscribed all kinds of chewing tobacco, containing tobacco or nicotine or both in accordance with the Supreme Court order.

Karnataka is the second state in India to ban e-cigarettes. The state also prohibited single cigarettes. Until September 2019, the state counselled 15,698 patients in tobacco cessation centres set up in private dental colleges.

Mangaluru, Jan 11: A large number of people from the Women India Movement on Saturday staged a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) here and raised slogans denouncing the newly enacted law.

Protestors were seen carrying placards that read, 'Stop diving India, Boycott CAA, NRC, NPR', 'We are humans, not criminals', 'Save India from fascism'.

"Today's youths are tomorrow's future. The present leaders are scared by the youths and are trying to wipe us out. They are scared of the students because they are raising their voices," a protestor told media.

"It started with the triple talaq, then the removal of Article 370 and Babri Masjid verdict. We Muslims kept quiet but now it is a question to our Constitution. We are not here as Muslims but as an Indian Citizen protesting against the cruelty of the BJP government," she added.

The protestor said the Central government is trying to make India a Hindu Rashtra by wiping out all other communities.

"This fascist government is trying to poison the minds of Hindus against the Muslims. After Muslims, there will be the Christian community and then other communities. The main motive of the government is to only keep Brahmins in India," added the protestor.

The newly-enacted law grants citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.

Bengaluru, Jul 31: BJP leader CP Yogeshwar has slammed Yediyurappa supporters and said the JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy is supporting BJP.

Speaking to the reporters, Yogeshwar said, "Congress president DK Shivakumar and Janata Dal (Secular) leader and former CM HD Kumaraswamy, both are Yediyurappa supporters."

"His words seem to support the BJP. All that Kumaraswamy had said, during our government's rule, are happening including the officers they mentioned are being transferred. He has come forward to support BJP from the back door," Yogeshwar.

While reacting to allegations made by CP Yogeshwar, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president DK Shivakumar has said that earlier Yogeshwar requested for State Legislative Council (MLC) member ticket and now such people are blaming me without any evidence. This shows his dishonesty to his party and the kind of person he is."
