Haider bags five national awards, Kangana Ranaut is best actress

New Delhi, Mar 25: Vishal Bharadwaj's Haider, an adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet set in Kashmir in the tumultuous 1990s, won big at the 62nd National Film awards with five awards, while Kangana Ranaut bagged the best actress for her clinching role as a shy Delhi girl on a solo honeymoon in Paris in Vikas Bahl's Queen. Chaitanya Tamhane's Court won best film while Kanada actor Vijay won best actor for Nanu Avanalla Avalu. Queen also bagged award for the best Hindi feature film.

national awardsOmung Kumar's biopic Mary Kom won an award for being the best popular film providing wholesome entertainment, while Srijit Mukherji bagged the best director award for Chotuskone. Chotuskone also won the best cinematography (Sudeep Chatterjee) and best original screenplay (Srijit Mukherji).

Shahid Kapoor-starrer Haider, set in 1995 and taking on the conflict and civil disappearances in Kashmir. It won the awards for best screenplay dialogues (Vishal Bharadwaj), best male playback singer (Sukhwinder Singh in Bismil), best music direction (Vishal Bharadwaj), best costume designer (Dolly Ahluwalia), and best choreography (Sudhesh Adhana).

In its announcement, the jury noted that Tamhane's Court won for its "powerful and stark depiction of the mundaneness of judicial procedure … forced us to reflect on the heart-wrenching insensitivity of institutional structures". The movie, which premiered at Venice Film Festival and also picked up the best film in the internation film category at Mumbai International Film festival, will hit the theatres on April 17

28-year-old Ranaut, who won the award for the second time after the best supporting actress award in 2008 for Fashion, was rewarded "for an endearingly etched out performance that is grounded in contextual specificity and at the same time is disarmingly spontaneous", observed the jury. She will be seen in Tanu Weds Manu Returns next.

The awards, decided by a nine-member jury headed by P Bharathiraja and Kamal Swaroop, were announced in a press conference in Delhi. This year, the awards went to a movie in a language which has not been awarded before: Rabha film Orong, directed by Suraj Kumar Duwarah. "We were delighted by Orong, and we applaud the attempt for being the first movie in the Rabha language," said Bharathiraja. Another feature film that was awarded in a language not specified in schedule VIII of the Constitution was Rajeev Bhatia's Haryanvi film Ragdi The Honour.

Chennai, Feb 10: The Income Tax Department on Monday summoned Tamil actor Vijay over charges of tax evasion and his alleged links with financier Anbu Chezhiyan.

The development comes after the IT Department on Friday carried out a raid at the actor's residence in Panaiyur area in Chennai.

IT sleuths held searches in connection with the success of a recent film which was a Box Office hit, collecting around Rs 300 crore.

As per sources, the IT Department on Thursday recovered Rs 65 crores from the residence of Vijay's alleged financer in Chennai during raids which were carried out in the connection with the tax evasion case linked to AGS Cinemas.

Mumbai, Jul 8: Veteran Actor-comedian Jagdeep, best known for his role as Soorma Bhopali in "Sholay", died on Wednesday at his residence. He was 81.

The actor, whose real name is Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri, was not keeping well. "He passed away at 8: 30 pm at his residence in Bandra. He was not keeping well due to age related issues," producer Mehmood Ali, a close family friend, told news agency.

Jagdeep appeared in around 400 films but it is his role as Soorma Bhopali in 1975 film "Sholay" that is etched in audiences' minds even today. He also played memorable roles in "Purana Mandir" and in "Andaz Apna Apna" as Salman Khan's father.

Better known by his stage name Jagdeep, the actor also directed the movie "Soorma Bhopali" with his character as the protagonist. He is survived by two sons - Javed and Naved.

New Delhi, Apr 2: After donating to UNICEF to combat COVID-19, actor Kareena Kapoor Khan on Thursday announced that she will also contribute to PM-CARES Fund and Maharashtra's CM Relief Fund along with her husband Saif Ali Khan and son Taimur Ali Khan.

Kareena made the announcement through an Instagram post and also urged others to do their bit by doing whatever is possible.

"We extend our support to the PM CARES Fund and the Chief Minister's Relief Fund (Maharashtra)," read an official statement post by Kareena on Instagram.

"In times like these, every helping hand and every rupee raised matters. Do Help wherever possible," the statement further read.

However, the amount of donation hasn't been revealed in the post.

The star couple has joined a list of celebrities including Akshay Kumar, Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal and others who too have extended support to PM CARES Fund to fight against coronavirus.

Earlier on March 31, the 'Jab We Met' actor had announced their contribution to UNICEF, GIVE INDIA and the International Association of Human Values (IAHV).

There are 1764 active coronavirus cases in the country, while 150 people have been cured and 50 have died, as per the Union Health Ministry.
