Hand-made artifacts showcase India's culturally enriched regions

Mangalore, Dec 6: A ten-day exhibition featuring the rich and varied art and craft traditions from various parts of India,'Cottage Mela 2013' organised by Central Cottage Industries Emporium (CCIE) was inaugurated here on Friday, providing a platform for the cultural and artistic interchange between artisans and customers.

The exhibition-cum-sale was inaugurated by owner of Woodlands Hotel, Mangalore Ramesh Bhat in the premises of the hotel.

Several customers were seen interacting with artisans from Rajasthan, Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Hyderabad and other parts of the country, admiring hand-made art objects and jewellery.

Exquisitely-made handicrafts such as silver jewellery, ethnic show pieces made from terra-cotta, paintings, metal ware, woodcraft, show pieces made of marble dust from Tamil Nadu, pottery, lamps, Kashmiri hand-woven carpets, hand-crafted wooden furniture, brass and bronze idols and semi-precious stone jewellery were on display at the exhibition.

The sale also presented several kinds of textiles such as handloom and cotton sarees and dresses, kurtas, jackets and scarves from Bihar, Rajasthan, Lucknow and Kashmir.

Apart from the special attraction of hand-knotted carpets, handmade silver jewellery made by artisans from Kashmir caught the fancy of women who walked into the mela.

Another crowd-puller were exquisite art products and show pieces creatively made out of terra-cotta that were kept on display by Mangalorean Merlin Raskina, who has been making show-pieces and conducting exhibitions from the past 20 years.

Bengaluru, Apr. 10: Karnataka Congress leader DK Shivakumar on Thursday appealed to party workers to save the lives of people of the state and show solidarity with the people in need amid the coronavirus lockdown.

"Humble appeal to Congress party workers that the time has come to do our best to save the lives of people of Karnataka. Hospitals across Karnataka are running short of blood. This is a call for able-bodied to volunteer & donate blood. Let us show solidarity with people in need," Shivakumar tweeted.

With 16 fresh COVID-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours, the total number of confirmed cases in Karnataka reached 197 on Thursday, according to the state's Health Department.

India's total COVID-19 cases rose to 5,865 on Thursday, with 591 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Bengaluru, Feb 23: As India gears up to welcome Donald Trump on his maiden visit to the country, a kite artist flew a special 15-feet long kite to welcome the US President.

VK Rao, an international kite artist from Karnataka, crafted the special kite, which included the photographs of both Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the messages 'Namaste Trump' and 'Welcome to India'.

Speaking to ANI, Rao said: "We have created and flown this special kite to welcome the US President. The kite is 15 feet long."

Earlier, an Amritsar-based kite maker in Punjab had designed special kites to welcome Trump.

"As Donald Trump will be visiting India, so I have made some kites to welcome him. There are kites with pictures of PM Narendra Modi and Donald Trump," said Jagmohan Kanojia, the kite maker.

Preparations are on across the country to welcome Trump, who is scheduled to visit India on February 24 and 25.

During the visit, Trump is scheduled to participate in a roadshow with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will address a gathering at the Motera stadium.

On Monday evening, the President and his family will be visiting the Taj Mahal in Agra.

Mangaluru, Mar 27: A youth from Dakshina Kannada district, who had returned from United Arab Emirates earlier this month has tested positive for the deadly Covid-19 caused by the novel coronavirus. With this the total of Covid-19 in the district has mounted to seven. 

The fresh Covid-19 patient is a 21-year-old youth hailing from Karaya in Belthangady taluk. 

He had left Dubai on March 21 and land at Bengaluru Airport. Then he reached Belthangady through a KSRTC bus the very next morning. 

As he was suffering from fever and cough, he was admitted to Puttur government hospital on March 24. Same day his throat swab sample was sent for coronavirus testing. Today it was declared positive. 

His condition is said to be stable. However, his family members and those who were in touch with him are under observation.
