Hawala deals in KPL match-fixing case exposed

Bengaluru, Oct 4: A massive load of hawala transactions have taken place in Karnataka Premier League (KPL) which is marred by betting and match-fixing, according to investigators.

City Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao, said that special teams have been sent to Mumbai, Delhi and other cities to question more people involved in the case. Many rich and influential are involved in the case and all of them will be brought to book, Rao said.

The Central Crime Branch had already made two arrests in the case — of Ali Asfak Thara, the owner of Belagavi Panthers, and bookie Bhavesh Bafna who approached a bowler of Bellary Tuskers to fix a match. Bafna was also working as a drummer for the Bijapur Bulls franchise.

Police said over 20 B-grade players were interrogated in the case. Preliminary investigations revealed the involvement of national and international players in the racket.

The probe further revealed that betting was done internationally and bookies in Dubai were making hawala transactions. Cricketers who played the 2019 KPL tournament were also involved in match-fixing and will be arrested soon, Rao said.

Mandya, Jan 25: A woman committed suicide by jumping into Vishveshwaraiah Canal after throwing her two children into the canal near Thibbanahalli in the Taluk, police said on Saturday.

The deceased have been identified as Jyothi (33), Nisarga (7) and Pavan (4), of Hullenahalli.

According to police, the incident occurred on Friday.

Mangaluru, Feb 7: To stop the NRC and CAA from being implemented everyone has to fight unitedly highlighting the failures of the ruling party, said National President of Priyadarshini squad, All India National Women’s Congress Kavya Narasimha Murthy.

Addressing the workshop for the protection of Citizenship against CAA, NRC and NPR for the party workers at the Cordel Hall, Kulshekar here Thursday by district Congress party, she said, “Protests are being held everywhere against the CAA, NRC and NPR but if we only go on protesting, the ruling party will implementing divisive policies and new laws every day.

Many think that they may not be affected by the CAA, NRC or NPR and keep away from protesting against it. The congress should fight against the CAA concentrating on three approaches. We cannot fight against divisive politics by fighting only against the CAA and NRC. We need to expose the government’s failures, their divisive politics and continue our protests against the CAA, NCR and NPR.”

Mangaluru, Jan 18: The Dakshina Kannada District Karavali Utsava Samiti has chosen senior Journalist and Assistant Editor on Udayavani Daily Manohar Prasad for the Karavali Gaurava Prashasti 2019-20.

The award will be presented to Manohar Prasad in recognition of his contribution in the field of Journalism.

He will be given the award during the valedictory of the Karavali Utsav at Panambur beach on January 19.
