Udupi, Nov 7: The Karnataka High Court has refused to grant a stay on the celebration of Tipu Jayanti.
Manjunath, a resident of Hisodlur village in Virajpet taluk of Kodagu district had filed a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a stay on the celebration of Tipu Jayanti in Udupi and Kodagu district.
He had claimed that the Tipu Jayanti celebrations would lead to law and order problem in sensitive areas of these districts.
However, the High Court on Tuesday refused a stay and ordered notice to the state government. It also said that celebration of Tipu Jayanti cannot be illegal or anti-constitutional.
The Karnataka government, headed by Chief Minister S Siddaramaiah, has planned to celebrate the erstwhile ruler's birth anniversary on November 10.
