HC rejects Vittala Malekudiya's interim bail plea

Mangalore, June 12: Vittala Malekudiya, a student of Mass Communication and Journalism in Mangalore University, who is in judicial custody for his alleged naxal links, has been denied bail from High Court.

In its objections to Vittala's interim bail plea, the State Police had appealed to the court not to grant him bail stating that incriminating documents, newspaper cuttings and pro-naxalism literatures were found in his possession.

The State also said that the accused student had provided shelter and food to several naxalities at his home. The State also submitted that he had participated in a training camp organised by the naxalites in Western Ghats.

Objecting grant of bail to Vittala, the State also raised apprehension that if released, he might again join the naxal movement. Justice Subhash B Adi, who heard the matter, rejected his interim bail plea.

Vittala had moved the High Court, seeking bail and quashing of the first information report filed against him. He was arrested along with his father Lingappa Malekudiya by the Anti-Naxal Force on March 3, 2012.

Having been booked under Section 10 and 13 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Section 121 of the IPC, Vittala was denied bail by the local court. But, the court had allowed him to write the examinations under police security.

Women lead massive protest demanding liquor ban in Karnataka

Bagalkote, Jan 27: The bank of Krishna River in front of Sangamantha Temple at Koodalasangama in Karnataka today witnessed the launch of women’s indefinite strike demanding liquor ban in the state.

Thousands of women from various parts of Karnataka have taken part in the strike being organised under the banner of 'Karnataka Madya Nisheda Andolana'.

The strike was launched to draw the attention of the state government to press for a complete ban on the sale of liquor across the state.

About 50 various organizations and religious pontiffs have extended their support for the strike. Food is being cooked on the bank of the river for the agitating women.

The women from Chikmagalur, Tumakuru, Raichur and Ballari districts are taking part in it.

U T Khader goes into self-quarantine

Mangaluru, Aug 2: Former Minister and Mangaluru City MLA U T Khader has gone into self-quarantine after former MLC Ivan D’Souza tested positive for coronavirus.

Mr D’Souza had met Mr Khader and many other Congress leaders a day before receiving his throat swab test results.

Mr Khader announced on twitter: “Have gone into self-quarantine with immediate effect after receiving the news about #Covid_19 positive test of Former MLC Ivan D’Souza & his wife Dr Kavitha. Being COVID Incharge DK District taskforce committee, I am one among Ivan's primary contact.”

“I am going to discharge my duties from home for the next few days. You can reach out over phone at any point of time. I appeal to all my colleagues and friends who may have come in contact with us in the last few days to get tested for #Covid_19” he tweeted.

Pregnant women, unemployed among stranded Kannadigas in UAE; immediate repatriation urged

Mangaluru, May 6: The Karnataka NRI Forum - UAE has collected the details of those seeking to return to Karnataka amidst coronavirus lockdown.

Of these, 121 of these expats are pregnant women, 27 are senior citizens, 157 are in urgent medical need, 522 are unemployed, 377 are in the UAE on visit visa, 109 are in the UAE on expired residency visa, 30 are students and 566 others.

On Tuesday, May 5, the Government of India released a list of flight schedules for the repatriation of Indians who are stranded abroad. "...sadly we do not see any flights going from UAE to Karnataka," the KNRI said in a letter to Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers D V Sadananda Gowda, who is also a Kannadiga.

"We, Dubai Anivasi Kannadigaru and KNRI have collected the information of those who are in dire condition and would like to travel immediately. We would like to bring to your attention that in this list there are pregnant women and senior citizens who are in critical conditions and are waiting to travel," the KNRI wrote, urging the Union Minister to start at least one flight to Mangaluru as the majority are from this coastal city and not from Bengaluru.

Additionally, in order to help these struggling Kannadigas, the KNRI has notified the Government of India and Government of Karnataka several times through letters and conference calls, along with the Kannadiga's helpline, UAE.

With the help of likeminded businessmen and professionals, the KNRI Forum and Dubai Anivasi Kannadigaru have opened a helpline called "Kannadigas Helpline" through which they have received around 2,500 requests for food, medical, legal and other assistance.
