HCU, JNU: Joint youth front to intensify stir against NDA govt

February 28, 2016

New Delhi, Feb 28: Accusing the NDA government of using Rohith Vemula and JNU incidents to "divert attention" from its "failure" in keeping poll promises, youth wings of Left and other parties today decided to intensify their stir against the Centre.JNU

They demanded dropping of sedition charges against the JNU students and action against Delhi Police Chief B S Bassi, who will retire tomorrow.

"The cases of Rohith Vemula of HCU and Kanhaiya Kumar of JNU have been politicised by the NDA government to only divert attention of people from their own failures in keeping the promises made during the elections.

"And, people governed by RSS, who never contributed to our freedom struggle are now branding students as anti-national. We will oppose such attempts with greater force now," MP and President of Democratic Youth Federation (DYFI), M B Rajesh told reporters at the Press Club here.

The Palakkad MP from CPI(M) was joined by representatives from other youth bodies like All India Youth Federation (AIYF), All India Youth League, JD(U) and RJD youth wings.

"We had given a call to hold protest against the handling of these incidents by the Centre from February 27 (martyrdom of Chandrashekhar Azad) to March 23 (martyrdom of Bhagat Singh) and we will hold stirs in different capitals during this period.

"And from March 23-31, we will organise big human chains in different cities across the country," Rajesh said.

AIYF National General Secretary Tirumalai Raman said the Left and other "democratic fronts" have galvanised together and "we stand in solidarity on both Vemula's case and the JNU incident."

"The government first branded students of FTII as anarchists when they protested against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as its chairman and then called Rohith as anti-national and now sedition charges against Kanhaiya and other JNU incidents. It is only to hide its own failures," he alleged.

Rajesh claimed, "The Modi government had promised to generate two crore employment in five years but, as it nears two years in office, several thousands have actually lost jobs."

"The youth is becoming discontent with this government and the Centre wants to suppress their voice. But, we will stand by them," he said.

"As JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar and others were arrested based on fabricated evidence and doctored videos, we demand action against Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi also and dropping of all sedition charges against Kanhiya and other JNU students," Rajesh said.

"And, if they have any credible evidence then they must use that and take action," he said.

Rajesh also said that a national convention would be held here in March as part of the protests in which youth leaders from Left and and other fronts, besides authors and intellectuals, would be present.

The joint forum also reiterated their demand for removal of Union ministers Smriti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya from office in the HCU case.

New Delhi, Feb 13: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has congratulated AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal for his party's stupendous victory in the Delhi Assembly polls, saying the people of the national capital will continue to benefit from his leadership.

Responding to the Dalai Lama's statement, Kejriwal in a tweet on Wednesday said, "Am humbled by the kind words and blessings from His Holiness The Dalai Lama. Thank you very much @DalaiLama."

Referring to the Happiness Curriculum for government schools in Delhi, the Dalai Lama said he has a deep admiration for the efforts the AAP government has made towards "shaping better, happier human beings with improved values".

"These measures will have a positive impact on children's overall education, as well as helping the poor to fulfil their dreams of improving their lives," he said.

He also lauded the AAP government's initiative to incorporate aspects of inner mental development into the school curriculum.

"Through such initiatives, you are showing a path to the rest of India," the Dalai Lama added.

In a near-repeat performance of 2015, the Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday retained power with a stunning victory, winning 62 of the 70 assembly seats and leaving the BJP with just eight seats.

New Delhi, Mar 20: The government on Thursday said one Indian who tested positive for coronavirus has died in Iran while the other citizens infected with the disease are being provided treatment and taken care of by the Iranian government.

Noting that the virus tends to be more fatal for those whose immunity levels are low, a senior MEA official said the deceased, an elderly person, belonged to the vulnerable age group and had health-related complications.

The death was not because of lack of medical attention or care, he said.

"We have evacuated 590 people from Iran where the situation is very severe. The Indians infected with coronavirus in Iran have been segregated and taken care of very well by the government there. We believe they will recover and we will bring them back," the MEA official said, adding that 201 Indians were evacuated from Iran on Wednesday.

The official said closely knit families required some persuasion and counselling during the process of segregation to prevent the spread of the contagion.

The Indian ambassador and other officials explained the consequences of infected people not being separated from their families and were successful to a large extent in segregating the positive cases from the negative ones, he said.

"Some pilgrims and students are still there and our embassy and mission are in control (of the situation)," the official said.

New Delhi, Jul 10: Nepal has banned all Indian news channels, except DD News, for alleged propaganda against the country.

Reports say that Nepal cable operators have stopped getting signals of Indian news channels.

Nepal government spokesperson Yuvaraj Khatiwada said: "We request all not to disseminate news that infringes sovereignty and self-respect of Nepalis. This includes the media of neighbouring countries. We might seek both political and legal remedies."

Earlier, Nepal has amended its map which show some Indian territory as part of it.

Nepal's parliament on June 13 adopted unanimously the Constitution Amendment Bill, paving the way for accommodating the updated political-administrative map, which includes Indian areas of Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura, in its symbol.
