HDK again offers support to BJP after bypolls, but BSY dismisses idea

Bengaluru, Nov 26: JD(S) leader and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy reiterated that he will extend support to chief minister BS Yediyurappa if the BJP fails to secure the minimum six seats it requires to stay in power in the December 5 byelections to 15 seats. Yediyurappa, however, rejected the offer and pitched instead for “Congress-JD(S)- mukt Karnataka”.

“There is no question of midterm elections as the JD(S) is willing to support the BJP government to avoid imposition of yet another election on people,” Kumaraswamy said at a public rally in Vijayanagara, Ballari, on Monday.

Kumaraswamy had offered support to the BJP previously too, in a bid to prevent several leaders from his party switching sides. As if on cue on Monday, BJP state general secretary Arvind Limbavali hinted that the exodus of opposition MLAs into the BJP will continue, saying several JD(S) legislators were in touch with his party.

Reacting to Kumaraswamy’s offers of support, Limbavali, also the party’s convener for the bypolls, said it shows their “insecurity”.

Meanwhile, rejecting the offer, Yediyurappa said his government doesn’t need any party’s support since he is confident of winning all 15 byelection seats.

Speaking at a rally in Vijayanagara, Yediyurappa said, “If we have to make it Congressmukt Bharat then it should be Congress mukt Karnataka first. It should begin here. That’s our bypoll motto.”

However, Congress Legsilature Party leader and leader of the opposition in the assembly Siddaramaiah ruled out the possibility of JD(S) joining hands with the BJP and predicted midterm polls in the state.

“I am sure the JD(S) will not support the BJP,” Siddaramaiah said. “I know the party inside out since I was associated with it for a long time. I know their mindset. Seeking a fresh mandate may become inevitable.”

Siddaramaiah insisted fresh polls are a distinct possibility in the event of the BJP not winning the required number of seats to keep it in power. “They will have to resign,” Siddaramaiah said.

Siddaramaiah also criticised the way the BJP grabbed power, toppling the JD(S)-Congress coalition government. “What the BJP did was unethical,” he said. “They poached 17 MLAs from the Congress and JD(S) and formed the government. That is why we are now having bypolls to 15 constituencies. The BJP will suffer a setback.”

On whether he will become chief minister if the BJP government falls, Siddaramaiah said the high command and the legislature party will decide.

Bengaluru, Feb 13: UK's Chancellor of the Exchequer Sajid Javid quit the Boris Johnson government as part of a cabinet reshuffle unfolding on Thursday and has been replaced by Rishi Sunak, reports said.

Indian-descent Sunak, 39, who is married to Akshata, the daughter of Infosys co-founder N.R. Narayana Murthy, was Chief Secretary to the Treasury since July 2019.

An analyst with Goldman Sachs before joining politics in 2014, Sunak, whose grandparents were from Punjab and emigrated to the UK from east Africa, is MP from Richmond (Yorkshire). He was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Government in the Theresa May government.

Pakistani-descent Javid, who became the first Asian to become a Cabinet Minister when he was made Secretary of State of culture, Media and Sports in the David Cameron government in 2014 after stints as Economic Secretary to the Treasury (2012-13) and Financial Secretary (2013-14), was earlier the Home Secretary in the the Theresa May government.

He had then cleared absconding businessman Vijay Mallya's extradition to India in February last year following the decision by the Westminister Magistrates Court in December 2018.

Javid, who ran for Conservative Party leadership after May quit but lost to Boris Johnson, was made Chancellor by the later. In the reshuffle on Thursday, he was offered to retain his post if he fired all his advisors but declined and quit, the BBC reported.

Bengaluru, Feb 29: Dreaded underworld don Ravi Poojary's lawyer Dilraj has allegedly been kept out of hearing distance and as a mute spectator during interrogation by the police.

"The lawyer is a mute spectator out of hearing distance from the interrogation. He is not privy to what police ask Pujari," a source told media.

As directed by the court and requested by Poojary, Dilraj is allowed to be present near the interrogation for him to consult on legal issues, but the cops have made sure that he does not hear anything for fear of leaking information.

The court has also ordered the interrogation to be video graphed, which the police are carrying out.

Police sources said that Ravi Poojary is relaxed and cool during the multi-lingual interrogation.

"He is cool, giving frank replies. Poojary is exhibiting confidence in whatever he is telling. Maybe confidently lying, police are not new to him," said the source.

According to source, the gangster knows how to handle police, with sufficient knowledge to reveal how much he wants to, when to stop, when to talk, when to mislead and plant false information.

"Poojary is being interrogated in his mother tongue Kannada, Hindi and English. He is fluent in English," the source said.

However, the source denied speculation gaining currency that Poojary requested police not to send him to Mumbai fearing of being eliminated by the henchmen of dreaded underworld dons Dawood Ibrahim and Chota Rajan.

"Nothing of that sort happened. It doesn't work like that. He has been captured after 25 years, and he is not a king to choose. Wherever the law takes him, he will go there," said the source.

Rajan is serving a life sentence inside a high security cell in Delhi's Tihar jail.

Currently, the probe is focused on Tilknagar Shabnam Developers double murder shootout case. Police are discovering information, verifying it with respect to evidence and building the case.

Taking regular breaks, police are interrogating Poojary from morning till evening.

Of the over 200 cases against Poojary in the southern state, 39 are in Bengaluru, 36 at Mangaluru, 11 in Udupi on the state's west coast and one each at Mysuru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Kolar and Shivamogga in Malnad.

The other cases are in Mumbai (49) and in Gujarat (75) pertaining to extortion, kidnapping, ransom demand and murder threats.

Poojary also extorted huge amounts from popular Bollywood stars and realtors. He was also involved in an attempt to murder case, aimed at killing a prominent lawyer of Mumbai.

A four-member Karnataka police team led by Pandey brought the 52-year-old underworld don to Bengaluru from Dakar in Senegal via Paris in an Air France scheduled flight during the wee hours and kept him at an interrogation centre in the city's south-east suburb.
