HDK assures Sugar Cane farmers to get dues cleared by Sugar Mills soon

Mysuru, May 20: Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy assured a farmers delegation of an early resolution to some of their pending demands including early clearance of dues by Sugar Mills and withdrawal of cases filed against them.

Karnataka State Sugar Cane Growers’Association President Kurubur Shanthakumar who led the delegation to the Chief Minister said that Kumaraswamy has assured to convene a meeting on May 27 to resolve the issue over delay in payments dues to the farmers.

In a press release here on Monday, Shanthakumar said the Sugar Mills in the State are yet to clear nearly Rs 4,000 Crore for having purchased cane in 2018-19 though they are bound to clear the dues within 15 days on purchase of cane from farmers.

Frustrated at not being able to get liquor during lockdown, 2 commit suicide in Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru, Mar 30: In continuing cases of tipplers in the southern states ending their lives due to non-availability of liquor during the lockdown, two men committed suicide in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district.

The two suicides were reported in Kadaba taluk on Saturday, police said.

Tomy Thomas (50), a rubber tapping labourer in an estate at Kutrupadi village of the taluk, was found hanging at his rented house on Saturday. Thomas, a native of Kottayam in Kerala, had joined at the estate here a month ago.

Local people said he was desperately moving around in the last few days asking about places where he can get liquor. He had also not reported to work in these days. The body has been kept at the mortuary of a hospital at Deralakatte.

In another incident, a 70-year old man, belonging to Kodimbala village in the taluk, allegedly hanged himself from the branch of a tree near his house at Nakur.

The deceased has been identified as Thomas, who had left his family here 30 years ago and had been working in Kerala. He had returned here only a few years back.

Sources said Thomas, an alcohol addict, was having health problems related to withdrawal. He has been living on pavements at Kadaba without going home.

Kadaba police has registered cases in connection with the two incidents.

Incidents of tipplers committing suicide have been reported in Kerala and Telangana in the past few days. Two men ended their lives in Kerala today while a 50-year old daily wage worker jumped to death from a building in Hyderabad on Friday.

Karnataka ready to tackle COVID-19, flood situation: Revenue Minister

Bengaluru, Aug 7: Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashoka has said that state was prepared to tackle COVID-19 and flood situation.

"Today I had a meeting with officials from disaster management, housing, Police, agriculture departments. The government is ready to tackle both the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the flood situation," he told news agency.

The minister said he had held a meeting with officials to take precautionary measures.
"I sanctioned Rs 20 crore to the Fire Department to purchase the equipment for rescue operations. I have already announced red alert in six districts. Tomorrow, I will visit Kodagu, Chikmagalur to assess rescue operations. NDRF reached have teams for rescue operations," he said.

"We are monitoring all dams. Last time we got more floods because of dams. I have instructed to all district collectors that 70 per cent water be filled in dams. Remaining water be sent to canals. We are expecting more rains in nine districts this year," he added.

Women’s satyagrah, human chain mark Martyrs’ Day in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jan 30: A day-long ‘satyagrah’ by women followed by formation of human chain marked the Martyrs’ Day, the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, in Mangaluru.

The organisers were ‘We, the People of India’, whose sole intention was to safeguard constitution of India and raise voice against those to attack the constitution.

Amidst nationwide agitation by ‘We, the People of India’ against contentious CAA, NRC, the women of Manglauru have decided to hold satyagrah and form a human chain in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner in the heart of the city on January 30.

The Satyagrah commenced at 10 a.m. At 4:30 p.m. a human chain will be formed. At 5.17p.m. when the father of the nation was gunned down 72 years ago during his evening prayer at Birla House by Godse, the demonstrators raised the slogan of unity to defeat the ideology of Godse.
