HDK directs deputy commissioners to tackle rain emergencies

Mysuru, Aug 11: Expressing concern over recurrence of floods in parts of Karnataka, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy has directed the respective deputy commissioners to address the problems that arise out of the rain and heavy discharge of water from the dams.

Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, the chief minister said, that there is no dearth of funds for taking up relief works in the rain-affected areas in the state. “The government has directed the deputy commissioners to maintain a minimum of Rs 5 crore in their account for addressing rain woes," he said.

The government has already released Rs 20 crore of RS 100 crore announced in the first phase for Kodagu district, he said and added that the administration would take necessary measures to tackle rain-related emergencies without violating the model code of conduct, which is in force in view of ULB polls.

Mangaluru expat Mohammed Kana passes away in Saudi Arabia

Mangaluru, May 15: Mohammed Kana, son of late Ismail Kana and grandson of late Dr M S Bapanad Mulki passed away in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia due to heart attack on Thursday. He was 57.

Hailing from Mangaluru, Mohammed Kana was working in Saudi Arabia for past 30 years. He is survived by his wife, son and a daughter.

He was involved in various social and welfare activities in India and Saudi Arabia. His tragic demise has left huge vacuum in his family and community at large.

Mangaluru: Fishing season to be rescheduled due to COVID-19 outbreak

Mangaluru, May 2: Fishermen in the coastal districts fear that the fishing season ending on May 31 every year might be rescheduled early this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement department of fisheries on sturday said fishing season is closed for 61 days every year before the arrival of the monsoon.

As per the data with the Fisheries Department, this year the number of fishes caught has set a record.

With 26 new COVID-19 cases, Karnataka’s tally rises to 951; death toll at 32

Bengaluru, May 13: 26 new covid-19 cases have been reported in Karnataka taking the total cases to 951. This includes 32 COVID deaths, one non-COVID death and 442 discharges.

The new cases include eleven cases from Bidar - all of whom are from the containment zone - , four from Hassan, two each from Davangere, Kalaburgi, Vijayapura and Uttara Kannada and one each from Bengaluru Urban, Ballari and Dakshina Kannada.

All the cases reported in Hassan and Vijayapura are with a travel history to Mumbai. In Bengaluru Urban, a nurse from a designated COVID hospital who was under quarantine has tested positive.

32nd death

The latest death reported was that of a 60-year-old man in Kalaburgi district. The deceased man from a containment zone was brought dead on May 11 to a designated hospital in Kalaburagi, and he has tested positive for COVID-19, it said.
