HDK persuading Kiccha Sudeep to join JD(S); actor undecided

Bengaluru, Dec 31: The JD(S) is learnt to be making all out efforts to persuade Sandalwood actor Sudeep to join the party ahead of the 2018 Assembly polls.

Having remained out of power for over a decade, the regional party has lost its sheen. JD(S) state president H D Kumaraswamy now feels that bringing on board somebody like Sudeep, who is a superstar, will change the party’s prospects for the better.

According to party sources, JD(S) MLC C R Manohar, who is also a Kannada film producer, has been entrusted with the responsibility of convincing Sudeep to join the party.

Not only is Manohar producing Sudeep’s upcoming film ‘Villain,’ the duo have been friends for nearly two decades. Sudeep was also seen pledging his support to Manohar, when the latter filed his nomination papers to contest the MLC elections from Kolar-Chikkaballpur constituency two years ago. It was Manohar who facilitated a meeting between Kumaraswamy and Sudeep earlier this month on the former’s bidding.

When Sudeep called Kumaraswamy to greet him on his birthday on December 16, Manohar is said to have prompted the actor into inviting the JD(S) leader over for lunch. Kumaraswamy, who was quick to accept the invitation, visited Sudeep the very next day and pitched that he should consider joining the JD(S) and contesting the elections.

Manohar told DH the party is hopeful that the actor will consider the party’s invitation. “Sudeep and I are like brothers and it is true that I facilitated the meeting. Though he has no interest in foraying into politics, we are hoping that he will change his mind and join the party. If he ever comes to politics, he should join JD(S), and no other party,” he said.

Manohar said that the JD(S) will get a major boost if Sudeep decides to contest elections. The actor is yet to announce his decision.

The JD(S) hopes that Sudeep, like his uncle Sarovar Srinivas, will choose the regional party, if and when he enters politics. Srinivas was elected as an MLC twice on a JD(S) ticket.

It can be recalled that Kumaraswamy had asked voters in Mandya last year during the panchayat elections to “reject” actors entering politics and recognise only those persons who work for the welfare of the people. Both Kumaraswamy and Sudeep were not available for comment.

This time election will be tough enough for congress. There are many chances for spliting cong votes. BJP votes will be stable.

Ahmedabad, Feb 24: US President Donald Trump arrived in Ahmedabad on Monday for the first leg of his India trip.

The Air Force One plane carrying Trump and his wife Melania landed at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel international airport here at 11.37 am, officials said.

It was scheduled to land at 11.40 am.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who reached Ahmedabad over an hour before Trump did, was present at the airport to welcome the US president at the airport.

In Ahmedabad, Trump will visit Mahatma Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram, take part in a roadshow with Modi and jointly address over one lakh people at a cricket stadium, before heading for Agra to see the iconic Taj Mahal with Melania.

Trump, who is also accompanied by daughter Ivanka, son-in-law Jared Kushner and top brass of his administration, will get a taste of India's cultural melange during his high- optics Gujarat itinerary, after the bonhomie between the two leaders at the 'Howdy, Modi!' event in Houston last year.

The US president and Modi will participate in a roadshow from the airport to Sabarmti Ashram and from there to the newly-built Motera cricket stadium, where over a lakh people are expected to be present for the 'Namaste Trump' event.

Dance groups and singers from different parts of the country will be performing on stages that are dotting the 22- km route of the 'India roadshow' in the city.

Huge billboards of the two leaders and replicas of historic places in Gujarat have also been placed along the roads where people will greet the two leaders.

Over 10,000 police personnel, besides officials of the United States Secret Service, and personnel of the National Security Guards (NSG) and the Special Protection Group (SPG) have been deployed for the high profile visit.

The seventh US president to visit India, Trump on Sunday retweeted a video in which his face was superimposed on the hit Indian movie-character Bahubali, showing him as a great saviour.

Modi will accompany Trump to the Sabarmati Ashram, which was home to Mahatma Gandhi from 1917-1930 during India's freedom struggle.

Several world leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe have visited Sabarmati Ashram in recent years.

Ashram secretary Amrut Modi said Trump will spend 15 minutes at the place.

"Trump will visit the 'Hriday Kunj'. If he wishes, he will spin a charkha (spinning wheel). We will also gift him a coffee-table book, and a book containing 150 quotations of Gandhi," the Ashram official said.

Hriday Kunj is a room on the Ashram premises where Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Gandhi had lived for 12 years between 1918 and 1930.

The official said the US President would be briefed about Gandhiji and the importance of charkha as a symbol of self-reliance.

There will be a cultural extravaganza at the Motera stadium during the 'Namaste Trump' event, where Trump and Modi will address the gathering.

Bollywood singer Kailash Kher and some Gujarati folk singers will perform at the stadium, officials of the Gujarat Cricket Association said.

Students of various government and private schools have also been roped in to perform at cultural events and they have been practicing for days, an official said.

Billboards with slogans hailing Indo-US relations and having pictures of Trump and Modi walking together, shaking hands, and waving at the crowd during the 'Howdy Modi' event are dotting the city.

New Delhi, April 5: Former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy on Sunday challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to offer a "credible scientific and rational" explanation for his candle-lighting call and said he is giving "meaningless tasks" to an already exhausted population.

The JD(S) leader questioned if the Prime Minister asked the nation to observe a candle-light vigil on the eve of foundation day of BJP.

"Has the PM slyly asked the nation to observe a candle light vigil on the eve of foundation day of BJP? April 6 being its foundation day, what else can explain the choice of date & time for this event? I challenge the PM to offer a credible scientific and rational explanation," Kumaraswamy tweeted.

"The government is yet to provide PPEs for doctors and make test kits affordable for the common man. Without telling the nation what concrete steps are being taken to combat COVID-19 menace, the prime minister is giving meaningless tasks to an already exhausted population," he tweeted.

"It is shameful to convert the national crisis into an event of self aggrandizement & it is beyond shameful to push the hidden agenda of his party in the face of global calamity. May sense prevail upon the PM," the JDS leader said in another tweet.

Amid a nationwide COVID-19 lockdown, Prime Minister Modi on Friday appealed to countrymen to light diyas and candles on April 5 at 9 pm to fight the darkness spread by the pandemic. He asked the people to turn off all the lights in their homes and stand at doors or balconies and light candles or diyas, torches or mobile flashlights for 9 minutes on April 5.

Last month, PM Modi had asked the people to come out in their balconies and clap and beat utensils to show appreciation for doctors, nurses and others helping fight coronavirus on 'Janata Curfew'.
