Mangaluru:, Oct 18: A resident of Kavoor in Mangaluru, was defrauded of around Rs 1 lakh after a stranger pretending to be a bank executive called him and took his one-time password (OTP) multiple times a couple of days ago.
On October 15, the victim Ravi received a call on his cellphone from number 9771327694 and the person speaking in Hindi introduced himself as a bank executive.
The caller told Ravi that his bank account needs to be linked with his Aadhaar number and he is required to provide his ATM pin as well card details.
An unsuspecting Ravi provided the details. After some time, the caller also got the OTP, Ravi had received on his cellphone. This happened multiple times and ultimately Ravi realised that Rs 99,966 had been withdrawn from his bank account.
When Ravi informed this to his son, the latter told him that he was conned by the cyber thieves as it was Sunday and bank officials don’t call customers on holidays.
The next day, he again received a similar call and the caller told him that he would credit the money which he had withdrawn and requested again for the OTP.
Ravi's son who spoke to the caller refused to give the OTP. A case has been registered at Cyber Crime Cell police station and investigations are on.
The owner of mobile number 9771327694 is already wanted for police in Dakshina Kannada. In June this year, one Abdul Rahman from Sullia taluk in DK district had lodged a police complaint after losing Rs 1.5 Lakh to a stranger. In his complaint, he had confessed that he had shared OTP with a person who called from the above number.
