Health impact study of Mangaluru’s APD presented at Tata Institute of Social Science

Mangaluru, Aug 11: City based environmental NGO Anti-Pollution Drive (APDF) Foundation was invited by Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS), Mumbai to make a presentation about their health impact study on the outdoor workers of Mangaluru and Bengaluru. The report was presented during the National Seminar for Clean Air organized by TISS in association with Centre for Environmental Health & Public Health Foundation of India.

Dr. Melanie Rodrigues, scientist in regenerative medicine at Stanford University who also is board member of APD Foundation, represented the foundation and explained the project to the seminar faculty and student-delegates. The main objective of the seminar was to raise a discussion on the right to clean air in urban setting focusing on the rights of some of the most vulnerable communities. The other panelists invited to the seminar were the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mumbai Traffic Police; Joint Director, Mumbai Pollution Control Board and others.

Titled ‘Shuddha Gali’, the project was a pioneering research undertaken by APDF to collect scientific data on the impact of air pollution on outdoor workers such as street vendors, traffic policemen and auto drivers. APDF completed 3 phases of this project in Mangalore and has completed one phase in Bangalore. The research brought Mangalore its first data on the impact of air pollution on the health of outdoor workers. Under the project it was shown that 26% of the traffic policemen (2016), 19% of auto rickshaw drivers (2017) and 35% of street vendors (2018) were affected by air pollution.

After listening to APDF’s presentation, other organization representative who were present showed keen interest to replicate APDF’s health research projects in Tier 2 & 3 cities of Maharashtra. 

Dr Melanie Rodrigues, who has about forty scientific publications in reputed international journals to her credit, has undertaken compile and consolidate all the studies under APDF into a comprehensive report for publishing in reputed peer reviewed scientific journals.

Anti-Pollution Drive (APD) Foundation is a not-for-profit organization which was founded on 2nd October 2014 to coincide with the Swachh Bharath initiative launched by. APD is driven to work towards achieving clean sanitized environment and unpolluted air for the citizens and works closely with various Government and Private agencies across the country.

Mangaluru, Mar 23: In its efforts to contain the outbreak of COVID-19, the district administration has ordered that all shops and establishments selling essential commodities to remain open only between 0600 hrs and 1200 hrs from Tuesday till March 31.

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh, in a press release here, announced that autorickshaws and taxis should not ferry passengers and should be utilised only during emergencies and for transportation of essential commodities among others.

Ms Sindhu has also ordered shutting down industries. Only those industries involved in the production of essential commodities, medicines, medical instruments, medicine, fuel, farm produce among others had been exempted, Please log in to get detailed story.

Mangaluru, Jul 15: A septuagenarian from Bantwal taluk died due to coronavirus infection at a hospital in the city taking the covid-19 death toll in Dakshina Kannada to 54.

The deceased was a 73-years-old and a resident of Kasaba village in Vittal, Bantwal. Recently eight members of his family were tested positive for covid-19 including his son.

He was admitted to a hospital in Mangaluru where he was tested positive for the virus. He did not respond to the treatment and breathed his last, sources said.

The final rites were carried out by a team of trained activists of Popular Front of India (PFI) at a designated graveyard. All necessary precautions were taken by the authorities concerned and police during the funeral.

Bengaluru, Aug 6: With rains in several parts of Karnataka amid Covid-19 pandemic, state Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar on Thursday asked the people to maintain caution and contact the Health department helpline in case of any symptoms.

"There is heavy rain in several districts of the state's coastal, Malnad and north interior regions. People have to observe utmost caution during these rains amid corona infections. In case of any symptoms like fever, cough and cold immediately call the health department helpline 104," Sudhakar tweeted.

As of August 5 evening, cumulatively 1,51,449 Covid-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 2,804 deaths and 74,679 discharges.

Among the districts where the new cases were reported, Bengaluru urban tops the list accounting for 64,881 cases.

Regarding Bengaluru, Sudhakar said, there are 4,276 beds across 11 Covid care centres in Bengaluru.

"As of today morning, 936 of them i.e., 27.79 percent are vacant. Out of the 3,346 patients, 306 patients are due for discharge today," he said in another tweet.

Aimed at availing beds at Covid-19 hospitals for symptomatic patients and those in need, the government had decided to shift all asymptomatic patients to Covid care centres.
