Mumbai, May 7: The IPL circus has exploded in a series of controversial incidents overnight with West Indian Kieron Pollard throwing a bat at Australia’s Starc.

The pair had been at each others throats in the clash between the Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals but matters came to a head in the 17th over.

Starc bowled a bouncer that narrowly missed Pollard’s helmet. The young Australian then appeared to speak his mind to the batsman who waved him away contemptuously.

The following delivery Pollard pulled away just as Starc approached the wicket, but the bowler continued and bowled a ball down the leg side toward the retreating Mumbai Indian batsman.

Pollard exploded with rage and shaped to throw the bat at Starc but managed to only hurl it harmlessly into the ground at his feet.

The saga continued when Pollard was run out by Starc.

The West Indian was hopelessly stranded and the Australian, who plays for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, held the ball above the bails signalling toward the batsman to attempt the futile run before eventually completing the dismissal.

In the Royals innings Pollard greeted Starc with a bouncer and took a catch to end his innings.

The Mumbai side won the match.

In the 2013 Big Bash League a clash between Pollard’s West Indian team mate Marlon Samuels and Shane also got out of hand.

On that occasion the West Indian also threw his bat.

IPL 7: Rohit, Pollard star in Mumbai Indians comprehensive win

Mumbai, May 7: Riding on fine batting performances by skipper Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard, defending champions Mumbai Indians registered their second win in the India Premier League (IPL) beating Royal Challengers Bangalore by 19 runs at the Wankhede Stadium here Tuesday.

Put in, Rohit struck an unbeaten 59 off 35 balls, and Pollard made a 31-ball 43 as Mumbai Indians posted a mammoth 187 for five in 20 overs.

It was a dismal batting performance by the Royal Challengers as they had to pay a heavy price for inconsistency.

Barring Chris Gayle (38), Parthiv Patel (26) and Virat Kohli ( 35) none of other batsmen could put up a semblance of fight and they managed 168 for eight in 20 overs .

In fact Royal Challengers batsmen had to blame themselves for the loss as the trio of Gayle, Patel and Kohli, who was playing his 100th IPL match, gifted away their wickets after having done all the hardwork.

Gayle and Patel gave Royal Challengers a good start with their 53-run partnership for the first wicket but then Royal Challengers squandered the impressive start .

Gayle struck three fours and three sixes in his 24-ball knock while Patel hit five fours during his 19-ball stay.

Veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh (2/33)A did well to remove the openers while pacers Lasith Malinga ( 2/29) and Jaspreet Bumrah (2/22) did well in the death overs.

Kohli showed glimpses of his brilliance with a quickfire 35 off 28 balls hitting two fours and two sixes but after he departed in the 14th over the innings fell apart.

Yuvraj Singh, the most expensive buy in this year's IPL,A managed six from 10 while Rile Rossouw came up with a cameo ofA 24 off 14 balls.

Earlier in the day, Chidhambharam Gautam gave Mumbai Indians a stable start with 30 off 28 balls. After the early departure of opener Ben Dunk (15), Gautam was involved in a crucial 46-run stand with Ambati Rayudu (9) for the second wicket.

And just when it looked that Mumbai Indians had the proceedings in control, they suffered a mini batting collapse losing three wickets for 13 runs. From a comfortable 71/1 they were left struggling at 84/4.

It was then Rohit, who played a captain's knock , and Pollard took Mumbai Indians to a position of strength with their 97-run stand for the fifth-wicket in just 60 deliveries.

Rohit was the aggressive of the two as he spanked four sixes and three fours while Pollard relied more on fours hitting six in 31 balls.

What also helped the Mumbai Indians was the indisciplined bowling performance by Royal Challengers, who conceded 25 extras including 12 wides.

The match also witnessed a heated exchange between Pollard and fast bowler Mitchell Starc during the Mumbai Indians innings.

Pollard had pulled out while Starc was still in his bowling run up in the 17th over. Starc, however,A continued his bowling and fired it towards the West Indian. Pollard also flung his bat towards the bowler and it needed the intervention of the umpires to cool down the things.

Los Angeles, Feb 14: Tributes to the late Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers legend who died last month in a helicopter crash, will play a major role in Sunday's 69th NBA All-Star Game.

This year's annual showcase of league talent will be played in Chicago and feature numerous nods to Bryant, a five-time NBA champion who also matched a league record with four NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player awards.

Bryant, an 18-time NBA All-Star, died at age 41 on January 26 in a crash near Los Angeles that also took the life of his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others.

All-Star teams guided by LeBron James of the Lakers and Greek star Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks will compete to win each of the first three quarters, which will all start 0-0 and last 12 minutes.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the clock will be turned off and a final target score will be established by taking the leading club's cumulative score through the first three quarters and adding 24 points -- the number representing the jersey number worn by Bryant for the final 10 seasons of his NBA career.

The first team to reach the cumulative target score will win the NBA All-Star Game.

All-Star Game jerseys will also honor Bryant and his daughter.

Team Giannis players will wear jersey number 24 in tribute to Kobe while Team LeBron players will wear jersey number two, the number his daughter wore when playing youth basketball.

Both teams will wear jersey patches displaying nine stars, representing the nine people who were killed in the crash.

Academy Award-winning actress and Grammy Award-winning singer Jennifer Hudson, a Chicago native, will perform a special tribute to Bryant, his daughter and the others who were killed in the crash. Her performance will begin the night ahead of the player introductions.

James and Antetokounmpo each chose their squads from available starters and reserves voted and selected to the All-Star contest.

Team LeBron starters will include James, his Lakers teammate Anthony Davis, NBA scoring leader James Harden of Houston, Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers and Slovenian guard Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks.

Team Giannis starters include the Greek big man, Cameroon stars Joel Embiid of Philadelphia and Pascal Siakam of Toronto and guards Kemba Walker of Boston and Trae Young of Atlanta.

A record eight All-Star Game players from outside the United States also include Frenchman Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz on Team Giannis and Team LeBron reserves Ben Simmons of Australia and the Philadelphia 76ers, Lithuanian Domantas Sabonis of Indiana and Serbian Nikola Jokic of Denver.

Mumbai, Jun 6: Reminiscing about his 'special knock' of 208 runs from 153 balls, Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma revealed why his wife Ritika had got emotional after he smashed his third double century in ODIs.

Rohit narrated the incident during his appearance in Episode 2 of the 'Open nets with Mayank'.

The batsman, who was accompanied by Shikhar Dhawan and Mayank on the show, said his wife thought that he had twisted his hand while diving for the 196th run during the innings.

"As you can see my wife got emotional there, this day was special as it was my anniversary. Probably the best gift I could give it to her while I am on the field, it was quite emotional though," said Rohit during the candid chat.

"When I came from the ground, I just asked her why did you (Ritika) cry? So she told me that she thought I (Rohit) twisted my hand when I dived for my 196th run and that was a little worrying factor for her, she got little emotional of because of that I guess," Rohit added.

In the match, the 32-year-old scored 208 runs with 13 fours and 12 sixes against Sri Lanka at Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.

This enabled India to post a score of 392/4 in the allotted fifty overs.

India then went on to win the match by 141 runs.

"To be honest I was going pretty slow, I never thought I will get to a double hundred but once you cross 125, I feel it gets easier for you because bowlers are under pressure. Unless you make a mistake I don't think you can get out," said Rohit.

Rohit has scored two double hundreds against Sri Lanka and one against Australia in ODIs. The right-handed batsman is the only cricketer to make three double hundreds in ODI history.

Rohit, Shikhar, and Mayank would have been in action for Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, and Kings XI Punjab respectively, had the Indian Premier League (IPL) commenced from March 29. However, the tournament was suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

New Delhi, Mar 27: India skipper Virat Kohli on Friday made a heartfelt appeal to the citizens of the country, asking them to follow social distancing as a precautionary measure against the coronavirus pandemic.
He also went on to say that over the past few days, he has seen some people still taking to the streets, and added that if people still continue to venture out, then they are not being honest with the country.
Kohli released a small video clip on Twitter, making the public appeal and captioned the post as: "Please wake up to the reality and seriousness of the situation and take responsibility. The nation needs our support and honesty"
"Today, I am talking to you as a citizen of the country. Whatever I have seen over the past few days, I have seen people not following the lockdown, it has made me feel that some people are taking the battle against COVID-19 very lightly. I request you all to please follow social distancing, whatever the government is asking you to do, please follow it," Kohli said in the video released on Twitter.
"Think about what can happen to your family members because of your negligence. Our medical experts are fighting this battle day in and day out. If you are still going out to the streets, then I don't think you are being honest to your country," he added.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to impose a 21-day lockdown in the country as a precautionary measure against coronavirus.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total number of COVID-19 positive cases have risen to 724 in India (including 640 active cases, 66 cured or discharged people) and 17 deaths.
The World Health Organisation had termed the coronavirus outbreak as a pandemic on March 11.
