Heatwave kills 90 more in Andhra, Telangana; toll crosses 800

Hyderabad, May 27: The heatwave sweeping through Telangana and Andhra Pradesh claimed 90 more lives in the two states, taking the toll to over 800.

While 55 people succumbed to sunstroke in Andhra Pradesh, 35 were killed in Telangana.

Heatwave killsAndhra Pradesh`s Deputy Chief Minister N Chinna Rajappa on Tuesday said 551 people died till Monday while disaster management officials in Telangana confirmed 215 deaths.

The deaths reported on Tuesday have not yet been confirmed by officials.

Hyderabad Meterological Centre has warned that the heat wave may continue for another 24 hours.

Though there was slight drop in day temperature in Telangana, the state continued to be in the grip of heat wave due to the dry winds from north-westerly direction.

The highest temperature of 45 degrees Celsius was recorded in Hanamkonda, Khammam, Nalgonda and Ramagundem.

The temperature in most of the Telangana towns was above 42 degrees.

The mercury remained two to six degrees above average in the two states.

Coastal Andhra continued to reel under severe heat wave conditions. Jangamaheswara Puram in Guntur district sizzled at 47 degrees Celsius.

Most places in coastal Andhra recorded above 43 degrees Celsius. Parts of Rayalaseema also registered high temperature.

Rajappa told reporters that the heat wave claimed 551 lives in the state till Monday.

Almost all deaths were reported during last six days. Guntur district bore the brunt with 104 deaths, East Godavari accounted for 90 deaths, Visakhapatnam 84, Vijayanagaram 61, Prakasam 57, Nellore 39, Srikakulam 25, Chittoor 20, Kadapa 13, Anantapur 11 and Kurnool 8.

Chinna Rajappa, who holds the home portfolio, said the government has announced compensation of Rs.1 lakh each the families of the victims.

He appealed to people to take all precautions to protect themselves from sunstroke. He said there was a need to take extra care to ensure that the elderly and children are not affected by the heat wave.

According to officials, 81 deaths were reported in Andhra on Monday. The highest number of deaths (181) were reported on May 24. The heat wave claimed 151 lives on May 23.

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 24: The month of Ramzan will be observed from Friday in Kerala.
The crescent moon was seen at Kappad beach in Kozhikode on Thursday.

Amid nationwide lockdown in the wake of COVID-19, there will be no group prayers at mosques. The devotees have been directed to offer prayers at homes.

Palayam Mosque Imam, VP Suhaib said, "Usually at mosques in Thiruvananthapuram, devotees used to come to break the fast... But this year, amid lockdown, we direct people to prepare food at home and break the fast with family. Also, there will not be group prayers at mosques. People should pray at home."
"Imams and scholars have strictly directed people to observe all Ramzan-related prayers at home. There is no other option... Human life is the most important thing. Only if life exists, belief and religion can exist," he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on March 24 announced a 21-day nationwide lockdown as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of COVID-19. Later, the lockdown was extended till May 3.

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 27: Kerala Police social media team is using innovative methods to get people engaged in the home during the lockdown period. From conversing with people to giving them suggestions of must watch movies and sharing links of e-books Kerala police have become new 'chat friend' of people in the state.
"The traditional method of policing of interacting with people is not possible due to social distancing, so Kerala police is using the digital platform to reach out to people," Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Head Quarters Manoj Abraham, who is heading the social media wing told ANI.
"We used social media and tried to be different at the same time innovative. From creating awareness to taking precautions we through various videos like police dance, coronavirus animations etc reached out to people. We used film stars also and used local dialect. It has got good reach and public acceptance. The most important aspect is that they received the underlying message well and are staying home" he added.
Abraham also said that Social Media team of Kerala Police is also fighting the fake news and rumours being spread at the COVID- 19 times.
"Some people were misusing social media by spreading wrong information. We also went behind those who tried to sell medicines saying it is good against Coronavirus. We crushed them with an iron hand - registered cases and arrested them. We send a strong message in social media that no rumour-mongering will be allowed, " he said.
He said the Kerala Police realised that people staying indoors was one of the keys to winning the fight against COVID-19.
"We started a chat box with the public. People were in their houses and they used the time to chat with police on various aspects of lockdown. We provided them with the right information, " he said.
The social media team has prepared a list of e-books that can be downloaded and also has a list of must watch movies. Not only that the team also occasionally share jokes with people during chat sessions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced a 21-day lockdown in the entire country effective from midnight to deal with the spread of coronavirus, saying that "social distancing" is the only option to deal with the disease.

Mumbai, Jan 15: A relative of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray was killed and three others injured when their car met with an accident on Mumbai-Nashik highway, police said on Wednesday.

The mishap took place at Sinnar in Nashik on Tuesday night when the CM's sister-in-law Vina Karande and six other relatives were returning from Shirdi in a sports utility vehicle (SUV), Nashik (Rural) Superintendent of Police Aarti Singh said.

The car driver apparently lost control over the wheels, following which the vehicle overturned on a roadside while passing through a narrow bridge, located around 190 km from here, the official said.

They were rushed to a hospital in Nashik where Ajay Karande, husband of Vina Karande, died during treatment, the official said.

The three others were undergoing treatment at the hospital, the police said, adding that their condition was reported to be out of danger.
