Heavy rain, thunder, lightning as storm sweeps into Oman

Muscat, Sep 5: At least two people died and three others were missing as rains lashed northern parts of Oman on Friday afternoon.

The provinces of Muscat, Samayil, Amerat, Rustaq, Buraimi, Bahla, Ibri, Yanqul and Dhank were hit by heavy hailstorm which lasted for more than two hours.

An Omani woman and her housemaid died when their vehicle was swept away by flood waters in wadi Huqain of Rustaq province, according to the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA). The woman’s husband and son are still missing.

Rain in the provinces of Rustq, Dima wa Tayeen and Ibra flooded the nearby wadis and led to the closure of several roads.

The provinces of Bahla and Nizwa witnessed light rainfall.

Several low-lying areas in the provinces of Muscat, Nizwa, Hamra, Suwaiq, Sohar and Saham were flooded.

Another national was reported missing after he was swept away in Mutrah wadi.

In Muscat the flooding caused huge disruptions in traffic and caused hit capital’s roads like Sultan Qaboos road and Muscat Expressway.

Officials said traffic was still paralysed hours after the rain as many streets in the capital were submerged.

Gigantic rocks fell on Bausher Amerat road leading to the closure of the road for hours. Several trees were uprooted by the accompanying strong winds in Muscat.

Damage in properties were reported in Muscat. Flood waters entered houses and swept away vehicles in Hamriyah and Ruwi.

Water also entered some shops and houses in Muscat Grand Mall in Baushar province and Hamriyah area of Mutrah province.

More rain is expected in the northern part of Oman’s Hajar mountain range, according to Oman’s meteorology centre.

The Royal Oman Police (ROP) are advising residents to take precaution during the rains.

Meanwhile, temperatures in Muscat and Seeb were hovering between 30 and 32 degrees Celsius on Friday.

Dubai, Jul 15: His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced the launch of a 'New Media Academy in Dubai on Monday - a new institution that will train people on the science of digital media.

Taking to Twitter, Sheikh Mohammed said that new media is a new science that has its own set of special tools and secrets, and that the future cadres of UAE must be at the forefront of it.

"The academy will prepare new experts and managers in the field of communication in government and private institutions, as well as training professional social media influencers", Sheikh Mohammed tweeted, adding that the new media is providing new job opportunities and careers today, and will always be a main supporter in the journey of development.

Dubai, May 4: An Indian salesman in the UAE has won a whopping 10 million dirhams at an Abu Dhabi draw, a media report said.

Dileep Kumar Ellikkottil Parameswaran, from Kerala’s Thrissur, works with an auto spare parts company in Ajman and earns 5,000 dirhams (USD 1,361) a month, Gulf News reported on Sunday.

Parameswaran, who won the 10 million dirhams (USD 2.7 million) prize at the Big Ticket draw in Abu Dhabi, will spend a big part of the money to repay a loan of 700,000 dirhams (USD 190,574 ), according to the report.

He said that a good part of the prize money will be spent on the education of his two children.

Parameswaran, who has been a resident of the UAE for 17 years, lives in Ajman along with his family.

Big Ticket is the largest and longest-running monthly raffle draw for cash prizes and dream luxury cars in Abu Dhabi.

A live monthly draw is organized at the Abu Dhabi International Airport on 3rd of each month.

Tickets are sold for 500 dirhams (USD 136).

Baghdad, Jan 4: At least five people were killed on Saturday by an airstrike on a vehicle convoy of Iraq's Shia Popular Mobilization Forces in northern Baghdad, a source in security forces told Sputnik.

Earlier in the day, the source told Sputnik about a powerful explosion in Baghdad's northern district of Taji.

"A vehicle convoy of the Popular Mobilization Forces has been attacked. According to preliminary data, five people have died. Their names have not been clarified so far," the source said.

On Friday, several senior members of the Popular Mobilization Forces, as well as commander of the elite Quds Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps Qasem Soleimani, were killed by a US drone attack near the Baghdad International Airport.
