High Alert in Assam and Nagaland After Mob Lynching of Alleged Rapist in Dimapur

New Delhi / Kohima, Mar 7: The Centre has sought a report from Nagaland on the mob lynching of a rape-accused man by a mob in Nagaland's Dimapur, and put neighbouring Assam on high alert for possible violence. The mob had broken into the prison where the rape-accused was being held and dragged him out on to the streets naked before lynching him and hanging his body from a clock tower. Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang said that a high-level inquiry has been ordered into the incident. The state government has also suspended the Collector and the police chief of Dimapur District.

High Alert in Assam

The Army has been placed on standby in both Nagaland and Assam. The Nagaland government has also sought the assistance of paramilitary forces to restore normalcy in the region.

One person, suspected to have been part of the mob that pulled the alleged rapist out of the prison, succumbed to injuries he had sustained when police opened fire. A total of five people sustained injuries in the police action. An estimated 2,000 people had taken part in the lynching.

"We have sought a report from the Nagaland government about the incident and how a mob entered a jail and pulled out an inmate," said an official of the Union Home Ministry.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that he has already discussed with senior officials about the incident and asked them to take necessary action. "I have already discussed (it) with the officials concerned. All necessary steps have already been taken," he said.

The central government also alerted neighbouring Assam, and asked it to step up vigil so that no untoward incident takes place along its border with Nagaland, officials said.

"This is a very unfortunate incident that took place yesterday... Actually the culprit was booked, and forwarded to judicial custody and he was in Central Jail. But despite public asking to extend the interrogation and take action on the culprit. They forcibly they have taken out. So, the security people were overpowered and they could not contain the situation," Mr Zeliang told NDTV today morning.

"The Governor immediately had the cabinet meeting and appealed to the people to come down. Whatever happened, happened. But... constituted enquiry committee, high level enquiry committee. So now, the government will enquire into the matter, seriously," he added.

No evidence yet of coronavirus transmission onboard plane: IndiGo CEO

Jun 3: Emphasising that airlines are clearly the safest mode of transportation, IndiGo CEO Ronojoy Dutta on Tuesday said there is no evidence yet of coronavirus infection getting transmitted among passengers onboard an aeroplane.

His comments against the backdrop of instances of some passengers, who had taken flights after resumption of domestic air services on May 25, testing positive for coronavirus.

"Those people had the virus before they got on to the aeroplane. What is noteworthy is that they have done the tracing after that. There is no evidence of transmission onboard there... that is a very encouraging sign on the safety of airline travel," he said during an earnings call.

According to him, airlines are clearly the safest mode of transportation and there is no evidence yet of contamination on an aircraft.

"You can come in contaminated but so far there is no evidence of passing it on to a fellow passenger," he noted.

Amid concerns over the coronavirus pandemic, aviation regulator DGCA has asked airlines to ensure that to the extent possible, middle seat in flights should be kept empty.

In this regard, Dutta said the airline would keep the middle seat empty wherever it can and "where we have to fill the middle seat, we will have the extra protective gown".

To a query about possible hedging of fuel prices, he said it would be a dumb idea and that airlines adjust to ups and downs in fuel prices.

"I can't overemphasise what a dumb idea it will be for an airline to hedge fuel prices. I looked at it from different angles and it is not a good idea... we looked at hedging and we talked about it at the board level and we said no," he noted.

I and B Minister Prakash Javadekar condemns alleged attack on Arnab Goswami

New Delhi, Apr 23: Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, Prakash Javadekar, on Thursday condemned the attack on Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami saying that this is "against democracy".

"We condemn the attempt to attack renowned journalist Arnab Goswami. Essentially, we condemn every attack on any journalist. Because this is against democracy," the Union Minister said.

"It is really ironical that those who preach tolerance have become so intolerant. Therefore, we condemn this attempt. We appeal to the collective wisdom that this is undemocratic. As per present law, definitely, police takes action, if there is a complaint," said Javadekar.

Two persons were arrested on Thursday morning for allegedly attacking Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami and his wife Samyabrata Ray in Mumbai.

Insensitive and inhuman, says Rahul Gandhi on Modi govt’s decision to freeze DA

New Delhi, Apr 24: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has termed the government decision to freeze Dearness Allowance of Central government employees for a year as "insensitive and inhuman."

The former Congress President in a tweet said: "Lakhs and crores are being spent on the Bullet Train and New Delhi's Central Vista which should have been suspended, but the government has deducted DA of Central government employees and pensioners... It is insensitive and inhuman."

"The tragic part is that by deducting this amount from January 1, 2020 up to 30th June, 2021 for a period of 1.5 years, the government of India proceeds to deduct almost Rs 38 thousand crore from the income of these middle class government employees and pensioners, who rely completely on the pay and pensions that they receive," said Randeep Surjewala, chief spokesperson of Congress.

There are about 50 lakh such serving government employees and about 62 lakh pensioners.

"Even more tragic and objectionable is the fact that the government of India has not even spared our armed forces. The government has deducted Rs 11 thousand crore of the 15 lakh serving armed forces personnel and nearly 26 lakh military pensioners. What is their fault? They are serving the nation in times of all types of crises," said Surjewala.

The Congress alleged that the government did not spare the savings scheme.

Instead of curbing the wasteful expenditure, the government has been constantly hitting at the income of government employees and the middle class, it added.
